I was just out in the firing range firing the .22 rifle to record the number of stoppages per 1000 rounds (and we were seeing a few, almost all due to crappy ammo that won’t fire even when I strike it twice). We had a fastener vibrate loose on our prototype rifle and while we were repairing it one of the guys on the other side of the range was testing a PBR (patrol, bolt-action rifle) which is a sniper rifle for police use. It was firing .300 WSM, I was manually feeding so I was firing off a round every 10 seconds or so. At one point I managed to allow my thumb to drift up to the barrel (I wasn’t wearing gloves because I hadn’t planned on needing them when I went to the range) and the barrel was so hot I raised a blister about a half inch long on my left thumb! Sucker recoils pretty hard too. We didn’t have it fitted with a scope so I was just sighting down the barrel and throwing very large chunks of lead downrange into the gravel trap, no accuracy to report but at least I didn’t hit the floor or ceiling of the range.
