The Venerable Pooh - of Wootness!!!

Feels like "Nature" to them I guess

03/31/2009

Take from the following post what you will.

The wrapper of a vending machine product crossed in front of my eyes today, and I decided to read it. The following is not embellished:

Brand Name: Nature Valley
Product: Sweet & Salty Nut Granola Bars
Variety: Almond
Size: 1 Bar Net WT 1.2 oz (35g)
Additional front package text (visible in vending machine): DIPPED IN ALMOND BUTTER COATING / BURSTING WITH ALMONDS! / NATURALLY FLAVORED
Ingredients (in the same order listed on the package back):
Almonds
High Maltose Corn Syrup
Rolled Oats
Sugar
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Crisp Rice (Rice Flour, Sugar, Malt, Salt)
Palm Kernel Oil
Wheat Flake (Whole Wheat, Sugar, Salt, Malt)
Fructose
Canola Oil
Water
Yogurt Powder (Cultured Whey Protein Concentrate, Cultured Skim Milk, Yogurt Cultures)
Maltodextrin
Salt
Nonfat Milk
Soy Lecithin
Color Added
Honey
Natural Flavor
Banking Soda
Sunflower Meal
Peanut Flour
Mixed Tocopherols Added To Retain Freshness

The Following IS embellished:
First off: No one with diabetes should be led into believing that this is a healthy snack. There are 6 different forms of sugar in this thing.
High Maltose Corn Syrup (this was a new one to me, but Maltose = VERY BAD for diabetics. It's the same type of sugar found in beer)
Sugar (Hey, this is your standard Sucrose. From Sugar Cane or Sugar Beets)
High Fructose Corn Syrup (Seriously, this shit is in EVERYTHING. WHY?!!!)
Fructose (The sugar commonly found in fruits, such as apples. Somehow, we didn't have enough of it from the HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP)
Maltodextrin (I don't know much about this, but it is a sweetener, a type of sugar,  and it absorbs into the bloodstream at the same rate as glucose. BTW: glucose is Blood Sugar).
Honey (Oh, Sweet Honey...)

Now, will someone please tell me why something "Bursting with almonds" needs so much sugar? This is crazy. And where in the ingredient list is the "Almond Butter" coating promised on the front of the package?

This smacks misleading packaging. There should be a warning on the package for diabetics, or at least a glycemic index rating for this thing.

Let me point out, that the "Sweet" mention on the front of the package is the only thing to indicate the possibility of sugar/corn syrup. 6 different sweeteners certainly count as "Sweet", but MY GOD, Do you REALLY NEED that many?

And then there's the brand name, "Nature Valley". I don't know what valley they're in, but the one where I'm from wouldn't try to pass this shit off as being from nature.

Sorry. End of rant.

Damn, that IS a lot. Sounds like more of a sugar high than a 'natural' type of snack.

And why does it require Wheat?

I've had them before I was GF...and I don't remember seeing anything in them that really said it was a Wheat Flake. I remember the crisp rice cereal, the nuts, and the SUGAR.

I actually find a lot of products that contain Wheat, that really you're left wondering WHY.

Seriously, Tomato Soup? The point is?

Oh well...this Celiac person, salutes your gripe man.

Never thought I'd be willing to kill for a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich.

*sniffles*
I miss them so much.
