Going to rant a little bit:

So, as some of my readers may know, I work at a cookie shop in the mall where I live at that specializes in big decorated cookies. We do five display cakes in the window and I do the decorations on them. Well this Christmas, instead of doing the predictable "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy Holidays!" on all of them, in different designs, I decided to do a few of them in different languages. I did one in Chinese, one in German, one in Spanish, and then did a big present like one on the square one with a big tag that said To: You From: Santa. Then, the free one, I did a Happy Hanukkah one. Now, for the folks at home, keeping count, that's all the five display cakes that we have that go up front. I put them up front and realized that I didn't have one that actually said: "Merry Christmas" in English. I didn't think this was a big deal at the time. Oh, how apparently wrong I was.

Over the course of the last week that the cakes have been up, I have not had one, not even two, but three people actually take the time out of their day of shopping to come over to our case to let us know that theres no cakes in the case with Merry Christmas on them. Let me repeat that. They took the TIME to WALK OVER and complain about a cake that doesn't have Merry Christmas on it. May I also point out that three cakes do indeed have Merry Christmas on them, just in other languages. One of the customers even went on a little tiff basically saying: "What if it offends me that theres nothing up here that says: Merry Christmas!" Um... You're one of those people, aren't you?

What makes it even better is that I was not even here for these customer outbreaks, but the girls who work at the store with me were rather bewildered by it as well. I was kind of sad that I wasnt able to defend my work, as it was an honest mistake in the first place. I fully intended to put a Merry Christmas one in English out, but just got caught up in all the wonderful languages of our world.

I understand that Political Correctness has become a little ridiculous in the United States as of late. I too was absolutely floored when it was no longer vogue to say "Merry Christmas" (I still do, by the way.) However, there is a HUGE difference between PC-overboard and expanding your horizon of culture and the way other people say "Merry Christmas" as it is not just a United States holiday. God forbid Americans would actually be willing to learn something else besides what is shoved into their face. Think for an instant that we are not the only other culture in the entire world.

My cakes offend you? You offend me, sir. For your stupidity, for starters. For your lack of cultural relativism, for your lack of realizing that we are ALL immigrants to this strange little country called America (save for the Native Americans), and that each of us deserve to be represented, not just the white Christian English speaking part.

End rant? Maybe? lol. That was really bugging me for a bit. :D

Gotta go do some homework. Maybe I'll update later. :)

Peace and love.
Day five.

ACK! I think it's awesome that you wrote "Merry Christmas" in various languages and got creative with it. If I were working there (is it Ms. Fields, btw?) then I'd just explain that the cakes do indeed say "Merry Christmas" but that it's in German or Chinese or (what other language did you mention? I forgot and I'm on my laptop so I'm not going to scroll up... ) and then I'd say that there simply wasn't enough room in the case for the one in English and that I'd gladly make one up for them--all in good cheer, of course, so that they'd realize how AWESOME it is to be inclusive during this holiday season! And I'm freakin stoked that you put a hanukkah one on there.
