Yeah I would just do the certificate program, medical billers don't really make that much money and if you got an AA degree in it, you probably would never make enough money to make it worth it. If you want a degree then I would get the certificate to make some extra money while you're getting a degree in something else.

Thats true too. I used to work as a medical biller in the same hospital I work in now (I now work in medical records), and a starting biller made $10.45/hr. However, I do live in a fairly rural area and I'm sure larger/more populated areas start off paying more.

Yeah here where I live medical billers start at about 11-12 dollars an hour. I know a couple people who do that too, and I live in a pretty big city too so they don't really make that much more.

My boyfriend works for Kaplan University, so I know it's real XD
I just browsed their site really quick, they have a medical billing certificate, but I am not sure if it's a degree program or not. They have many programs though that you can look through, here |

I just completed my medical billing & coding program. I don't have a degree in it, but they give you a certificate. It's a good field to go into. It's not something I want to do the rest of my life for sure, but it's a way to gain some skills while I'm still in school for radiology. I would suggest going through a local community college. Most of them have continuing education classes like the one I did & they are pretty easy & quick.

If I were you, I'd definitely go in on the coding side. While it's much more difficult, it also pays much more money!

That's what I liked the best out of all of it. But in the small town I work in if you get a job you will be doing both, unless you are working for the hospital. But the hospital here only hires people with a degree. I think the ones with degrees in this field are called medical assistants. I'm not too sure though.

Medical Assistants are actually clinical - they work in doctors offices and can administer shots, do vitals, draw blood, etc. A coding degree is..well, a coding degree, lol. I work in the HIM department at a local hospital and we're looking for a full time coder.. it's just a tid bit of a commute from you though xD.
