Regardless if it's lent or not, it's just a healthy decision and a healthy choice.

I give up buying books. Every year. There's no point giving up something that causes no personal sacrifice. Sure, buying books doesn't sound like something especially difficult, but it is for me! Especially as my birthday falls during Lent!
I also observe Shrove Tuesday. I'm not a diehard Christian by any means, but I do see much more significance in Lent and Easter than in any other festival.

Gosh, why would I give up something I enjoy for something I don't believe in? I wouldn't! Hahaha. Although I do enjoy the great tradition that is Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday ;D
