I am not even thinking about getting one myself while I am expecting BUT I do know of someone who is!


What is your take on getting a tattoo while pregnant?

It's EXTREMELY dangerous. Any respectable tattoo artist will REFUSE to do that tattoo as well.

i really wouldnt know - i dont know the risk of getting one while preg, but with hormones... i am not sure if its a good combination... but ic ould be wrong everyone is different... i would be doing research if i really would think that...

It is a general rule not to make any drastic appearance changes while pregnant, such as getting a really different haircut. I think that rule applies to non-removable tattoos.

@WC: Why aren't you allowed to get a hair cut while pregnant? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

@LAS: Probably because pregnant women are known to be very emotional and a drastic change like a hair cut could cause emotional upheaval, but that's really about it for that. It's more like things like dyeing your hair while pregnant and getting a tattoo while pregnant that are advised against for health and safety reasons because of the dyes themselves, and with tattoos also the possibility of an unclean needle being used.

I agree that getting your haired dyed and getting a tattoo are VERY dangerous while pregnant but I have known dozens of woman who have gotten drastic haircuts while pregnant (normally going from long to short) and they do this so that when the baby is born they do not have to worry too much about hair styles, etc.

When you're pregnant, you sometimes feel an urge to make a drastic change to your appearance, such as a haircut. This is because being pregnant is very tiring and frustrating, and the pregnant lady foolishly thinks a new haircut will make them feeling like they did before they were pregnant. It doesn't though, and the haircut is usually bad.

I had the temptation to cut all my hair off when I was pregnant, but I remembered this golden rule and refrained.

Why is it dangerous?

@Madeline Rain: It's dangerous because there is always a chance of infection in a new tattoo. There's also a risk because not ALL artists are diligent in their pursuits.

Like I said, as a trained tattoo artist, I would never do one on a pregnant woman and no other respectable artist would either.

I would never even think about getting one while I had a baby in my womb. Women who do this I think are putting the baby at risk...and are being selfish!

I chopped my hair when I was at the end of my pregnancy - I LOVED it, but it was also to get rid of all the box color that was on my ends.

The main concern when getting a tattoo while pregnant, however, is contracting a disease/infection. Also, some skin dyes can effect yourself and baby, even still while you're breast feeding (obviously.)

And yes, getting a tattoo is a drastic change for anyone, not just pregnant women.

Personally, the risk of getting AIDs from a dirty needle makes me hesitant to get a tattoo now, I'm still "shopping around" for a respected tattoo artist & I'm not pregnant. I would not get a tattoo while pregnant or breast feeding. I'd be too fearful of putting my baby in danger.

i hope any professionaly artist will tell her no, and i hope she doesn't end up at a scratchers house getting it done anyway.

I would hope anyone wanting a tattoo would ask common sense questions like if they use new needles each time and ask that they open the package in front of you. When I got my tattoo, my tattoo artist showed me the package of needles still sealed in plastic, opened it in front of me, and explained he did this so I would be sure that the needles he was using on me never touched anyone else. He even made sure that I saw him dispose of them afterwards. I am surprised this isn't common practice among tattoo parlors these days. I got my tattoo 12 years ago.

Any true, profesional artist will deny a pregnant woman and even return a refund if the woman finds out she is pregnant after booking an appointment. This happened to me last year. I had an appointment to get my third tattoo and found out three weeks prior that I was 12 weeks pregnant. Even though the place I go has a no-deposit return policy because I brought proof of my pregnancy and because they know it's dangerous they more then happily gave me back my deposit and congratulated me! :)

Dying your hair while pregnant is not all that dangerous. =] Read up on it. Many, many health professionals have stated that it's alright to do it - but if you're still "wary" of it, to just not do it during your first trimester. Their largest concern, is the fumes you breathe in. Having your hair done in a well-ventilated place reduces this significantly.

That being said - tattoos - no fucking way. And any REPUTABLE tattoo artist, would refuse the service to you, as is their right. My tattoo places have signs posted right on the wall that say they won't tattoo if you're pregnant.

Though, I agree with Greta. Any tattoo artist should be opening the package of needles in front of you, and should be disposing of it properly in front of you, too. The place I go to makes you watch them bend the needle in half (it can't be used after that, won't go in the machine right), and dispose of it. It really shouldn't be that hard to find one that does it right, Mistress Snape (why did I feel naughty typing your name? LOL).

I guess I need to do some research. To be honest I'm not pregnant and when I get my hair colored the fumes are overwhelming which is why I stay clear while I am pregnant.

You have to make a deposit to get a tattoo?

You do if it's a large one. My friend wanted a large back piece done and she had to put half down up front.

@Jelly Emm had to put one down too. It wasn't even a huge one (his devil pin up on my facebook) but he had to put down a $50 deposit b/c it was for a custom drawing and he was coming back so the deposit was to make sure that we would come back after the artist had already drawn something up.

The place I go is top notch and gets booked VERY easily (pretty much ALWAYS filled). So when you make an appointment you actually have a consult first (like on the TV shows) where you go in, bring them what your looking for and they do a quick sketch of some ideas. They like your consult to be done 2 weeks prior so they have time to make your tattoo perfect. I love this place. Their work is amazing. The deposit is typically half of the tattoo price (which they are up front about in your consult). I like them too because in situations like mine they aren't jerks and "really" take your deposit. Some who just cancel to cancel without any sort of really good reason or proof, that's when they keep your deposit.

Dont get me wrong I have a few tattoos and I love them! I always plan them out for a year or more and then decide to get them. I still have my daughters names to get on my back along with my sons but like I said...I wouldnt do it while expecting. Even if there are "no known risks" besides the obvious. I recall someone on bloop getting a tattoo while she was pregnant a while back (a few years or so I think). I don't recall who, but I think she got her unborn child's name or something like that.
