Rationale

11/26/2008

Not that I feel the need to justify myself for owning a police/military handgun (from my previous entry) but I know that some people and some localities look upon handgun ownership differently. Many of my readers may not know that my job occasionally requires me to possess and transport fully automatic military machine guns and ammo off-site for testing. We have indoor ranges here at our facilities and our gates are protected by heavily armed guards with body armor so we feel safe from criminal attack when we are inside the facilities but our indoor ranges aren’t really long enough to do full field testing on the machine guns so occasionally we have to transport them to a semi-abandoned sand and gravel quarry in the next county for testing. We usually set up at 75-100 meters at the quarry but we can set up and fire at targets as far as 250 meters away in this location, those distances just aren’t available with our indoor ranges. These military weapons and ammo are very tightly controlled, it’s unlawful for most citizens to even possess them and I have to carry several pieces of paperwork including a letter from an officer of the company with that day’s date on it to legally have those weapons in my possession off company property. Due to the remote possibility that a criminal might want to steal machine guns and hundreds of rounds of belt-fed ammo we are strongly encouraged to be armed whenever we transport the weapons as well as when we are outside the vehicle at the quarry. We obviously don’t publicize our comings and goings but the quarry is within earshot (no pun intended) of an interstate highway and it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility for someone to hear us testing and to enter the quarry with the intent of taking the machine guns from us. For this reason alone I consider it prudent to carry a handgun that has the power and capacity to protect myself from anyone who might want to separate me from the weapons that I have been entrusted to possess. The quarry and the route we have to take to get there involve some very remote locations where cell phone service is spotty or nonexistent. I’m thankful I live in a nation that recognizes my right to defend myself in case I’m threatened or attacked and that I live in a region of that nation that allows me to exercise that right. I’m not a member of the NRA, I’m not a hunter, I’m not a police officer. I’m just a citizen who has a legitimate need for personal protection and a reasonable expectation that such protection might be required at some point. When I get the two new pistols in my possession that will be a total of three that I own. Each of them was purchased for less than what I can sell it for on the open market, I plan to have one at home and one that can be carried in my car. I may or may not keep the third, I wanted to try out two different concepts for personal protection with the two that I bought from the employee sale.

Speaking of work, this is my last day before Thanksgiving break. I’ll go home this evening, prepare some herb butter for the turkey and for spreading on dinner rolls then put the turkey in the smoker. While the turkey is being smoked I’ll prepare the yeast roll dough in the bread machine then when it’s finished I’ll prepare the dough balls for the dinner rolls tomorrow. The pies turned out quite well last night, they are in the refrigerator waiting their turn at consumption. :^d

Oh, and the boss just came by with some new lab coats for each of us. One of the guys in the group managed to get a grease stain on an $80 Ralph Lauren dress shirt last month (no, I don’t wear $80 shirts to work either…) so the boss ordered personalized lab coats for all of us. That was pretty thoughtful, I think. I’m easy to please lol.

In our neck of the woods over 75% of home owners have a gun in there house. I'm not sure what our carry and conceal rate is, but most people I know have their permits. Wayne and my Dad both carry pistols on them at all times. Although Wayne has had to stop bringing one to work...now that he works at the school.
