Arsenal, and baking

11/25/2008

The company where I work posted a list last week of used firearms available for sale to the employees. They had some cool items for sale, some great deals on tactical and police shotguns but I already have a nice police magnum shotgun. I decided that I could use a good pistol, they had some semi-decent prices on a variety of semi-automatic pistols on the list. I ended up signing up for a FN (Browning) Hi-Power, polished blued finish in .40 caliber. I was notified Monday that I would be able to claim my selection, it's listed as being in condition 1 so I hope it's virtually as new. This isn't it, I found a representative photo online. I probably won't be able to pick mine up for a couple of weeks.

We were also given the opportunity to choose a second firearm from the ones not already taken. I thought about it and eventually decided to request a Five-seveN IOM semi-automatic. The Five-seveN is an interesting little pistol. Somewhat homely, it was designed around a very specialized caliber that was originally created as a body-armor piercing round for the P90 submachine gun/carbine. The pistol they designed for this ammo is small, light (about 1.5 pounds with a full 10 round magazine) and the ballistics are designed for one-shot stopping power with approximately the recoil of a .22 round. The 5.7x28mm ammo that gives the pistol its name is the positive and the negative for this pistol, it's an expensive and oddball round that isn't available everywhere because some versions have been made unavailable to civilians due to their capability of penetrating body armor. The pistol itself has been banned in some places, even as some experts scoff at the caliber due to its small size. In the end the opportunity to have a small, ultralight semi-auto that has negligible recoil overcame my hesitance about the odd caliber and I signed up for one of those pistols in condition 2.

By the way, I just have to show you a picture of the carbine that fires that same unique 5.7x28mm ammo. I was very tempted to get one of these in the sale just for the wow factor and the complete coolness of the design but I was able to buy two pistols for less than what one of these would cost and in reality I'll get more use out of the pistols. As cool as this carbine is, in civilian form it's still basically a semi-automatic rifle that happens to have a 30 round magazine. I think I'd prefer having a semi-auto rifle in a more common sporting caliber, the 5.7x28 is pretty specialized and not necessarily a good choice as a sporting round.

So, to balance out the testosterone overdosed part of my entry I'll talk about baking now lol.

I love to bake, with Thanksgiving coming up I chose to bake two pies tonight. The first was a traditional pumpkin pie, the second was a chocolate chess pie. The chocolate pie is something I created based on two or three other recipes, I made it a couple of weeks ago and it was delicious but I didn't allow it to cook fully in the center. I was afraid I would burn it so I removed it before the middle was set, I ended up with about an inch of pie around the edges and pudding in the middle. I modified the recipe a bit tonight and adjusted the cooking time (my oven is slow even on known recipes) so I hope it's completely set through the middle.

Tomorrow I'll come home, prepare the turkey breast with seasonings and toss it in the smoker for about six hours. Then I'll shove it in the oven to finish roasting without drying out. Hopefully it will be awesome. While the turkey smokes I'll be preparing dough for dinner rolls in the breadmaker, they will get tossed in the fridge overnight and brought out to be baked fresh and hot for Thanksgiving dinner. My wife will prepare stuffing from a box and heat frozen corn in butter sauce just before we eat.
