I'm starting a photography class and I need a digital SLR with an aperture (?spelling?) which is one of those lenses that you attach. I'm looking at prices and cringing! Are there any GOOD cameras that are under $400 that include a lens out there? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.. someone help please?

I purchased a DSLR recently. The camera, plus a 18-55mm and 55-250mm twin lens kit, cost just under $1,500 (Australian).

$1,347.15 USD Sweet jesus woman. I had no idea you spent that much on it D: That kinda money would pay for an entire semester in my college. ;D Books included. |

Oh yeah. They're expensive things. xD And that wasn't all I spent. I got a flash ($300) and a tripod ($40), and a carry bag (I forget), and two lens protectors (I think the guy threw them in for free). Flash isn't essential, tripod might be, but the lens protectors definitely are - they prevent UV damage to the lens, and also physical damage - if the protector gets scratched, you can just get a new one for like $12. Replacing a scratched lens is significantly more expensive.
I'm also looking to get a macro lens... but they're another $500. I think I'll leave that for another decade. xD By the by, a semester at uni for me costs about $3,000. xD |

Good lord. D:
Makes me glad I'm not into Photography. Sounds like an expensive hobby ;D My school is cheaper because I go to a technical college. I have no idea how much University of Wisconsin schools cost. But I'm sure its somewhere around what yours does ;D |

Yeah, thats about normal. My mother-in-law got one for Christmas 2 years ago and it was like $1600 USD for the thing plus the case and extra lenses.

And I did about 2 full days' worth of research - scoured the internet, compared prices, tried to work out which camera was best for me without being outrageously expensive. I found Canon to the the best brand in terms of value for money. Nikon is good too, but the equivalent Nikon model cost a lot more than the Canon kit I got.

Digital SLRs are impossible to come by for that cheap.

I think you are going to struggle, aperture doesn't just mean a different lens, it just means the amount of light allowed into the lens, on cheaper SLR's you only have two apertures wide and telephoto. I doubt you will find a camera completed with lens for $400, finding a body could be a struggle, unless you can find something second hand. You might be able to get a good SLR for $400 with a fixed lens, just make sure you either get a camera with a rechargeable battery or buy some rechargeable batteries because SLR's eat them up really quickly.
For a lower range Nikon SLR you are looking at around $550-$600 with a lens with low magnification. |

Yeah, like everyone else said, it would be impossible to find a good DSLR for that price.
The Canon XS is a less expensive DSLR, but you'd have to do the research to figure out what is best for you and your needs. |

i got a canon rebel xt when it first came out for about $700 with a kit lens. you could probably get the same camera for a lot less now, i'm not sure about $400 or under, but definitely less than what i paid for it then. most lower end DSLRs with a lens are at least $500. photography is an expensive hobby. i work for a photography company and use their equipment and supplies, and the cameras we use are nikon D300s, which sell for a couple grand, not including the lens.
