Oh, I meant The Stand is 1152 pages. I've never even attempted to read IT, I watched the movie and something about clowns in sewer drains doesn't sit right with me.

IT is one of those books that won't really creep you out until you finish it and turn the lights out to sleep. Unlike The Shining, which scared the crap out of me the whole time I was reading it ;-D

One book that absolutely freaked me out was Lovely Bones. I don't know why, but about 3/4 of the way through I was skimming the pages just to get the general idea of what was going on. I think I didn't fully know the ending of it until a month after I had finished the books.

Also, Kiss the Girls by James Patterson freaked me out a few months after I read it. I was laying in the dark and started thinking about that book and wanted to crawl out of my skin.

The Shining did that to me. And The Amityville Horror. Pretty much anything with evil houses ;-D

I second (or third, or whatever number we're on now) Harry Potter.

I'm a fan of Sarah Dessen - Just Listen, This Lullaby, Lock & Key. Those are the ones I've read, and they're good. They mainly deal with 17-18 year old girls, but they do cover some pretty good themes.

One of my favorite books ever is As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner; it's kinda odd, and a bit confusing at times, but it's amazing.

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Funny and entertaining characters and plots. So far she is up to 15 books (quick reads of about 250-350 pgs). Number 16 is being written.

Dan Brown is much better to read than to watch. He's at 5 books now.

Neil Gaiman has quite a few things as well. Coraline is a better movie than book, funnily enough. Mirrormask is enjoyable but a lot of emotional influence on the soundtrack. Stardust is a very decent movie with a cast of stars. It's very quirky.

Gregory Maquire wrote Wicked, which is now a popular musical. His forte is to take fairy tales and write the darker side of them.

Gail Carson Levine is my personal writing hero. She writes children's stories but they are charismatic. Her blog on writing is superb for those needing writing direction. Though if you read her books, don't watch the movie of Ella Enchanted. Kickass book... shitty shitty movie. Even Levine has gone on record saying that if she thinks of it as something seperate from her work she can at least appreciate it.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien - fantasy
LOTR Trilogy by JRR Tolkien - fantasy
Once and Future King by TH White - King Arthur fantasy
If you like fictional books about the Tudors, I suggest the author Phillippa Gregory
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
I haven't read much by Jane Austen but I only like Sense and Sensibility so far. I haven't read Emma yet.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Anything by Edgar Allan Poe
I enjoyed reading Twilight. It is a mindless read. If you over think it, you'll hate it.
I only like the last 3 Harry Potter books. The younger ones are too boring to me.

Its not a series, although it could be read as such...
This present darkness
Piercing the darkness
Both by Frank Peretti. I kinda grew up with those two books. His newer one "Tilly" is completely different turn for him. His latest books though starting with the Oath going on up to the House I havent cared for much. Nor have I the movie versions.
Granted he is a Christian writer, but if movies like Legion, Constantine etc were things you enjoyed you would like the darkness books. Its about the world of demons and angels that is unseen to most but are present in daily lives. Along with a captivating story line involving their humans.
Both books were combined into a single movie some time ago (want to say mid 90's), but since it stayed so true to the books it was given an "R" rating, and he refused to release it with that rating. Maybe some day he will re-think it and let it go to DVD or something.
