I have lost my best friend...not to illness or anything like that, but simply to life.

We were once so close and now live rather far from each other. We don't have much time to talk anymore, and our lives have very little in common.

We've tried keeping up with each other, but, on those random chances we DO get to chat, it's getting harder to act like no time has passed. We are both spectators on one another's lives.

And it hurts. And sucks.

I wish that things could be different, that we could remain good friends. But at this point, we are now mere strangers...people we tell others all of the funny things we did together.

I fear our forever friendship is breaking, and that the pieces simply cannot be put back together.

But how do you tell the person you were once SO close to, that it's over? How do you say goodbye to the person who knows you best?

Honestly, I say tell this friend all of this. Tell her/him that it makes you sad that you don't talk the way you used to.

Chances are they feel the exact same way. Start texting, or email on a nightly basis or something.

It's amazing the things we can fit into our lives when we think there isn't any room.

჻ೋ჻ Sometimes friends just start slipping away without even much effort on either person's part. You can either find ways to bring you two closer together, or you can decide if you've grown apart for good and cut all ties. But make sure you are sure before you cut ties, it's hard to go back. Sometimes just talking to them about the distance growing between you helps put you closer again. It's always hard to grow apart from a close friend. Good luck! ჻ೋ჻

sounds like life is just happening to your friendship, not it breaking apart.

why does it need to be over? are you saying unless you can talk to this personal regularly you don't want them in your life at all? that's kinda sucky.

i have a lot of friends i hardly see now, but i don't tell them i think our friendship is over because we lead busy lives and can't always talk. that's what happens when you grow up. you just have to accept it and adjust your attitude to the level of friendship you now share.

try making more of an effort to talk, tell them person you miss talking to them like you used to rather than throwing in the towel completely. how would you feel if they said this to you? pretty shitty i'd imagine.

I totally agree with this. Couldn't have said it better.

this is kind of what happened to me with a girl i met a summer camp a while ago. we lived more than 2 hours away and by the end of high school, our friendship was just gone.

I lost my best friend, and it was mutual. She didn't want to be in my wedding, and wouldn't tell me why, so I flipped, and then she didn't want me in her son's life anymore. We were besties since we were 8 years old, and now we're both 21. We haven't talked in months, and I can't forgive her for what she said and did...I hope you and your friend can make amends, because once you cut it you can't go back.

You don't have to. It's not an actual relationship that you have to 'break up' with them if/when they drift away. It does suck, I know, but there's no reason to throw them away completely. Just accept that they aren't as 'close' of friends as they once were, and keep in touch here and there. You friend is most likely feeling the same way!

This sounds a lot like me and mine. I've known him since I was 6 and well... graduation happened. Going to college damned near out of state happened. Facebook being mainstay to our means of communication happened. And it's hard, because there's nothing more that I want than having him be my best friend. IN PERSON, no less. I don't know if we could ever rekindle what we had, all the good times and the secrets and all of that... I just don't know, but somehow I keep my fingers crossed. Good luck.
