i'm planning a trip to the UK for a month. i have a few places i want to go to, london, edinburgh, glasgow and cardiff are the only definites at the moment. i'll be there from the 20th of february to the 19th of march.
i was wondering if any uk bloopers would mind telling me about some interesting things to see and do? so perhaps where you're from, you're closest city and the interesting/fun stuff to do around there. i haven't figured out much to do in between major cities. i'll be staying in manchester for a little while visiting family too, but i'm not sure what we'll end up doing. any help's appreciated :) |

Of course visit London! This city is awesome!!
You cannot visit the UK without travelling to the heart, London =3 You should visit; Brighton Windsor Bath Oxford Devon York Stratford-Upon-Avon Cambridge -- Never been there before but going for a lecture there next week ^^ |

I can tell you lots about Glasgow and Edinburgh, and a fair bit about Cardiff. The prettiest parts of Scotland are further north but you need time for that, and also you're coming in winter so the weather will probably be totally miserable. You may get some snow though (although this winter has been unusually mild so far and we haven't had much at all. Last year there was snow on the ground from November to late January!).
You'll also need to give me your dates because I might be able to come and meet up with you in Edinburgh. Stirling is also good (Stirling castle, Wallace Momument) and there's a day tour that runs from Glasgow (though not sure if it goes in winter) to Stirling and Loch Lomond. I stole their itinerary when my Australian cousin was here and we did the same route by car. Difficult in snow though. |

I live in Wigan and if I didn't... I honestly wouldn't want to visit it!
If you want to head to Scotland from Wales via the Northwest though, there's plenty of lovely places... Lake District: If you like scenery, some of the views here are breathtaking. Famous for Beatrix Potter and the Lake poets Wordsworth and Coleridge.. Chester: Lots of Roman history. Manchester: I think you'd love Afflex Palace... it's my favourite place in Manchester, google it and see if you agree :) Blackpool: Tacky seaside resort that I personally hate but they have a Dr. Who museum that will probably be a bit tacky but might be good fun if your a Dr. Who geek :) My favourite place in this country though is Devon, particularly the North of Devon (Woolacombe and Croyde)... its beautiful. |

Though the best place for Doctor Who fans is Cardiff.

your entry on the doctor who tour is a major reason i want to go haha.
i should be in edinburgh from the 3rd till the 8th, then glasgow till the 11th. it'd be awesome if we could meet up :) i've been told to try to get to loch lomond if i'm able to. miserable weather is my friend. my kinda of miserable weather is the kind melbourne is having now. |

Haha, I thought it might be.
You've got a lot of time in Scotland! So you could manage up north if the weather allows. There's a backpacker bus tour I think... it's called Haggis Tours or something like that. You should also look at my entry from when my Australian cousin was here. I think the Stirling/Loch lomond tour goes from Edinburgh or Glasgow, but just not sure about winter (not sure about the backpacker tours in winter either). The Melbourne rain I experienced when i was there reminded me of home! But in winter here it's not just cold and wet, we also get snow. |

i've wanted to go to scotland for a while. i figured major cities would be the easiest at first. it's good to know tours to other parts of the country start from edinburgh and glasgow.
i'll enjoy the weather. is it still considered winter in march weather wise? i've never really dealt with snow either. i think i may have to buy appropriate clothing over there. |

For some reason I thought you were coming in Feb! Even although I see now that you said March.
March is better. It's starting to come into spring but can still be cold and wet. Snow is unlikely, but does happen. (And I have no idea what shifts I'm working in march) |

blackpool seems like it'd be fun, but then i imagine myself there and just think no. it kinda looks like luna park, also near the sea, here. it's tacky too.
thank for the info on manchester. i have cousins there, but they work and i'll need something to do during the day. ah lake district. glad i asked, i'd have forgotten about that. |

Lots of people recommend Stratford but I'd only recommend it if you're a massive Shakespeare fan. You can get the same experience in many other towns in the country. Stratford is very small and very, very boring. Everything closes early and it's really just not that special. However, if you do decide to come up the West Midlands way, Warwick Castle is always worth checking out.
In London, the places I 100% recommend are: The London Dungeons Tower of London National Gallery (in Trafalgar Square - much, much better than the two Tates) Hamley's on Regent Street My favourite pub is The Coal Hole on the Strand, and there is another really nice one in Covent Garden called Porterhouse Wandering around Covent Garden on an evening is really something. Madame Tussauds is ok, but it's overpriced and it will be full of Japanese tourists who don't understand the concept of queuing. |
