The end of my Christmas break

12/29/2008

Friday was our regular grocery shopping day. We went out around 12:30 PM, the traffic was awful. We didn’t do much of anything else, the weather was very damp and overcast and it looked like it could rain at any moment. I think it finally did rain, some time in the evening. I picked up the kitchen/dining room and went to bed relatively early since Saturday was planned to be a long day.

Saturday started early, I rolled out of bed when the alarm sounded at 5:20 AM. I shaved and got dressed then fired up the car to drive about an hour north to meet up with a friend by 7 AM. We were driving to North Carolina to make a few stops, we wanted to visit with several people that we know from the model car hobby. We ate breakfast then stopped in Gaffney, SC (where the municipal water tower is fashioned to look like a peach!) to visit one person for a while, then on to Shelby, NC to meet with someone else. We ended up with a group of seven car modelers sitting around swapping stories, and I also got a small decal artwork project to work on. Next we drove to Lenoir, NC and spent a little while browsing in a hobby shop there. I bought a few decal sheets and one resin model car body while I was there. Our final stop was at the home of an acquaintance who had just moved back to Granite Falls, North Carolina from the Mesa, Arizona area. His dad and uncle were both NASCAR crew chiefs in the late 1950’s and through the mid 1960’s, his dad’s team won the championship in 1960. We left at around 7:30 PM, drove back through Hickory, NC to Gastonia where we stopped and ate dinner. It was after 11 PM when I was dropped off at the place where we left my car so I didn’t get home until after midnight. When I got home I was tired but still too wound up to sleep so I watched TV and played on the computer until around 5 AM.

My wife rolled me out of bed at 10:30 AM to get dressed for lunch. We went out to eat around 11:30 AM but I was still stuffed from the late dinner the night before so I didn’t eat much. After lunch she wanted us to drive across town to the big mall so she could look for jeans. I agreed, even though I was tired. In retrospect I probably shouldn’t have agreed. We got there and went inside, most of the stores weren’t open but it wasn’t quite 1 PM yet. We walked to Dillard’s which was open, but as soon as we got inside she said that she only came to look in Penney’s. Since we have a Penney’s about three miles from our house I asked her if she had checked there yet. “No.”

We hiked back to the Penney’s in the mall where we were, we got there about 1:05 PM but it still wasn’t open. She sat down and waited, I have to confess that I started to sigh and be grumpy. I was still very tired and slightly irritated that she hadn’t checked the store right by our house before driving 30 minutes to the other side of town. Penney’s finally opened at 1:30 PM and she found one pair of jeans like she was searching for. I drove us home and went straight back to bed, where I slept for another two or two and a half hours. I felt much better when I woke up the second time.

Today is back-to-work day for me. I work Monday-Wednesday noon, then I have a half day of vacation followed by a holiday on Thursday. Friday is another full day of work and will probably be the first day most of my co-workers are back. The office is pretty quiet this week.

Ooohh you're travelling a lot!
And Lenoir, sounds like you weren't very far from my dear husband. He lives in Lenoir County, NC.
Have a good time back at work !
