Springtime

02/09/2009

We had amazing weather this past weekend and it looks to continue through the week. Saturday was in the high 60’sF and Sunday got into the 70’s. I spent some time enjoying the outdoors both days, on Saturday we went to see a movie and while I was out I stopped at Home Depot to buy a sheet of MDF to repair our sofa where one of the springs had pulled out of the frame. I had to cut and fit the MDF and two pine strips to retain it in position, it was so nice to be working outdoors in short sleeves. On Sunday we went out to eat then when I returned home I spent an hour outside washing the car. When I removed the hose nozzle from the hose to coil it up I found what appeared to be the remains of a pretty good-sized spider that must have been spending the winter inside the garden hose. It had washed through the hose and was trapped by the wire screen on the inside of the nozzle where it attached to the hose. Nothing was left but some mush and several legs by the time I disconnected the nozzle. When I finished that job I gathered up my tools and installed a peep hole in the front door so my wife can feel a bit more secure. Then I oiled my riot shotgun and checked the imprint of the firing pin in a piece of cardboard, just so I could feel more secure lol. Seriously, our neighborhood seems to be quiet and secure but there has been an increase in crime in the city recently so my wife wanted to install the peep hole just so she can check who might be outside without giving away her presence.

The movie we went to see was “Gran Torino” with Clint Eastwood. My wife cringed at much of the language but I thought the movie was very good overall. I wish they hadn’t used that title, it implies that it’s a movie centered around the car. It’s not, it’s a movie about a man and his family and his way of life. A blue collar, rust belt “On Golden Pond” in many ways; just as “On Golden Pond” wasn’t about fishing but fishing was the setting and catalyst for the human interaction “Gran Torino” used the car as the catalyst for the story that grew out of the events.

My boss and one other engineer are out of town this week, they are visiting our sister company in Utah. My other co-worker gleefully e-mailed the weekly forecast for there and for here, this week will be in the 60's and 70's here while in Utah the high temperature for the week is forecast to be 33°F!
