Socks by the pound

10/03/2011

I made one of my rare pilgrimages to the mall on Saturday morning. The timing was perfect, it was well past the “back to school” crowds and late enough that the fall/winter clothes are on the racks but not far enough into autumn that Christmas shopping has begun. I go to the mall infrequently enough that I really can’t remember the last time I went, I’m guessing it was back in the spring sometime. I actually had decent success, I bought two pair of pants, three shirts, and nine(!) pair of socks. When I returned home I went through my drawers and closet to toss out things that are becoming too threadbare or disreputable (or just plain out of style) to wear. I wreaked havoc on my sock drawers, every pair of socks that I can’t remember wearing went into a trash bag. I threw away socks that I bought in the ‘80s! I think I had five pounds of old socks in the trash bag when I was done, along with maybe a half dozen shirts and three or four pair of pants. I actually have fewer clothes than before I went shopping!

I stopped for a Starbucks while shopping and they had some delicious-looking pumpkin bread for sale. I didn’t get any because it was too close to lunch but I looked up recipes when I got home and I made two loaves yesterday. I think it turned out pretty good, I increased the amount of the spices and substituted Splenda for the white sugar called for in the recipe. I had one end piece from one loaf last night while it was still warm, I’ll try a center slice this evening to judge the taste and texture.

It became cold almost overnight here, the daytime temperatures never got higher than 68°F or 69°F all weekend and my outside thermometer read 49°F this morning when I left the house to drive to work. I sleep so much better when the temperatures are in this range, I love this weather!

YAY for successful trips to the mall. And yay for getting rid of stuff too! If I got rid of the same amount of stuff you did, I'd have nothing to put on my back. I'm not big on clothes shopping and I would still wear stuff I wore when I was 16 if it weren't for the fact I had a baby since and can't fit in them any longer (I still could 7 years ago before I got pregnant).

Oh man! I would have loved to take those 80s socks off your hands
