My neighbor hanged Santa!

01/01/2010

I'm sure my neighbor never realized that his Christmas decoration looked sinister! From a distance it really does look like Santa was hanged. Or maybe I'm just twisted...

My two weeks of holiday/vacation is coming to an end, I already dread having to get up so early for work Monday morning. I've gotten a few things accomplished, just yesterday I dropped off my wife's car at a neighborhood tire store to repair a tire. Twice in three months it's given me the message that the right front tire is low on air pressure, the tire store found a small leak that they repaired and I also had them align it for me. I also finished a model car project that was started back in early 2004 but has been boxed up through the past two moves. One of the message boards I participate in has an "Amnesty Challenge" over the Christmas holidays. The challenge is to select a stalled model car project that hasn't seen the light of day for years, pull it out, and finish it before New Year's. I chose a project I had started just because the paint job had interested me, it's a replica of a car that Frankie Avalon drove in the 1967 movie, Fireball 500. The kit was reissued in the late '90's and I got the body painted before sticking it back into the box. I think that in my mind the paint job was the challenge, when I had successfully completed the paint job I considered the model complete in my eyes. Here are photos of the actual car from the movie and what my model looked like when I pulled it out of limbo:

I finished it tonight on schedule, or at least I'll call it finished. I need to add a dab of paint detailing to the center of the wheel spinners and I need to attach the battery and radiator hose under the hood but it shows well right now.

It's been somewhat wet and miserable the last couple of days. Not heavy rain like Christmas day (when we actually had a bit of flooding in town) but just grey and damp and drizzly and chilly. We did the grocery shopping this morning since we weren't sure what would be open on New Year's Day and we managed to go at a time when it wasn't actually raining but it still was much more pleasant to be indoors working on a model car rather than being outdoors.

We went out on the 23rd to look at Christmas lights, I had trouble photographing them but I got a couple of them to photograph passably well.

We continued our holiday tradition of going out for breakfast on Christmas Day then going to see a movie. We braved the pouring rain to go to IHOP for breakfast then went to see "Sherlock Holmes" in the theater. I thought the movie was very good, I enjoy Robert Downey Jr.'s acting anyway. It's a bit disconcerting though, as he ages he looks more and more like Al Pacino! Nothing much out of the ordinary really happened otherwise...
