Hot gases, Hudson Hornets, and Nano *Edit*

01/11/2012

I spent a couple of hours yesterday attending a demonstration at work of some new software that we’re looking at buying that will allow us to simulate the movement of the projectile and hot combustion gases down a gun barrel and through the muzzle device. We’re looking at three different software suppliers who all have a package that will simulate the physics of that behavior, I’m looking forward to us choosing one and getting to play with it a little bit. There will likely be a training trip involved too.

I had to buy a fresh sheet of Bare Metal Foil for my model car projects last night, I had started to foil the chrome trim on one of the Hudson models on Monday and I found I had less than I thought. One of the Hudsons requires almost a half sheet of Bare Metal Foil to do all the trim and I only had about 1/8 of a sheet left. I stopped by my hobby store on the way home from work last night and decided to buy two sheets, I got one of the standard chrome and one of the ultra bright chrome.

Here is an image of the package the sheet of foil comes in. It’s a very thin sheet of adhesive backed foil on a waxy backing paper, a sheet is 6” X 11.5”:

It’s like I told the sales guy, “I’m sure I’ll end up using more than one sheet of the foil, I have three Hudsons to finish!”

I think I’ll be finished building Hudsons for a while after I complete this three car build. I love the kit but the chrome trim is very tedious to foil.

Oh, and I was reading about the iPod Nano recall a couple of days ago so today I checked my ancient iPod that I keep in my drawer at work to see if it was affected. I bought this iPod secondhand from a co-worker a little over five years ago, in December of 2006. Paid $50 for it at the time. Whaddyaknow, the serial number checked out as one of the recalled units. I read some comments online that the replacements they are sending out are refurbs but it’s still a lot better than what I had. We’ll see how long it takes to get me the box to return mine, and how long it takes to get the replacement.
