Food coma

06/22/2009

I’m sitting here pounding caffeine to try and stay awake until 5pm so I can make it home. I made the tactical error of going out to lunch with the guys in the office, we went to the Pizza Hut all you can keep down buffet and inflicted major damage to their balance sheets. When we arrived at approximately 11:50 there was no sign of food on the buffet. No breadsticks, no pizza, no pasta, not even a crumb or empty pan. Evidently they were late getting food going, they made up for it by keeping a steady stream of food moving to the buffet line and my group rewarded their efforts by consuming it as fast as they could put it out. I’m definitely paying for my indulgence now, though.

I don’t remember writing about this so I’ll give a bit of background. In March my wife went for a power walk in the mall with her friend who lives next door. She chose to walk in sandals and returned home with knee pains that have ranged from “steady” to “unbearable” ever since. Not bad enough to incapacitate her but enough to limit her mobility for the past three and a half months. Several trips to the family doctor produced diagnoses of tendonitis and increasing dosages of painkillers and anti-inflammatories, the doctor finally ordered an MRI to be done around Memorial Day. Over three weeks went by before we heard the results, according to the MRI there was a cartilage tear in the knee. She was referred to an orthopedist (which my wife repeatedly referred to as an orthodontist…) who has scheduled her for arthroscopic surgery to repair the cartilage. Surgery is June 29, physical therapy is June 30. I hope it gets her back on her feet, I keep reminding her what happens to horses who suffer leg injuries! Seriously, it’s been really bad for her to have been off her feet for so long. She’s gained about 20 pounds and that only increases the stress on her joints.

It’s been hotter than the hinges on the gates of Hell here in the Midlands of South Carolina since the middle of last week. We didn’t really feel the oppressive heat until Saturday though, a combination of temperatures about 5°F higher overall and no afternoon/early evening rains to cool things down made Saturday insufferably hot and Sunday little better. Saturday was reported to be 96°F (36°C) but the humidity made it feel much hotter. Sunday was spent mostly indoors sorting through my model car inventory to choose things to list on eBay.

It sounds painful for your wife. I hope she recovers fast!
And I miss pizza hut all you can eat buffets! We don't have them here. Heck, they don't even deliver out where I live, although there are two pizza hut restaurants in towns not too far away (just means I need to get on a train to get to them, and walk a little bit), so I didn't eat any pizza hut since I got back!
I hear it's hot in NC too, I talked to Brian on Sunday afternoon and he said it was 97°F out.

RYNs: Actually Eric's rifle is a Savage. Same as Mommy's first deer rifle.
