Point and click

I had an interesting opportunity at work today. One of the guys sitting by me was tasked to investigate the various methods used by our competitors to indicate the number of rounds present in their pistol magazines. He had about a dozen different brands and models of semi-auto pistols from our archives of competitors’ pistols in his cubicle and I took the opportunity to fondle about half of them. Grips, sights, and slides are definitely a matter of personal preference and it was reinforced to me that I’m definitely NOT a Glock kind of guy. I handled a Glock, a Smith & Wesson M&P, a Kahr P9, a Ruger (didn’t notice or recognize the model designation on that one), a Steyr, an XD, and at least one other pistol that escapes me. Most were .40 S&W but the Kahr was a 9mm and I think the Smith & Wesson M&P was a .45. Since our market is primarily service guns (Military and Law Enforcement) we really didn’t look at much in the way of smaller pistols. With the exception of the Kahr they were all full-size and chambered for service rounds.

I still like the feel of my Hi-Power at home, but there were a couple that pointed and gripped as well as my Beretta Cougar and my FNP-9. The XD was probably my favorite of the pistols I checked out today, but I thought the grip surfaces were a bit too aggressive for bare hands. The model we had used very blocky features to assist in maintaining a grip. If I had to pull it out of the holster in snow or freezing rain to defend myself I think I’d appreciate the aggressive surface but it was a slight turn-off for a range gun. That little Kahr was a nice-feeling gun too. Probably one of the nicest true compacts I’ve held. We didn’t have the opportunity to fire any of them, it was strictly an engineering exercise to determine the best in class methods of indicating the number of rounds in a magazine but it left me feeling good about my personal arsenal.

I always find it hard to get a grip that feel comfotable in my small hands. Although I have shot a police friends Glock and it wasn't that bad.
