I think summer has finally arrived here in the Midlands of South Carolina after several fits and starts that saw high temperatures for the past three weeks range from 65°F to 95°F. Today was typical for our summer, muggy and warm with a chance of scattered showers as the heat and humidity combine. The extended forecast calls for more of the same into next week. At least it’s not miserable yet, I had lunch with several of my co-workers at a nearby burger stand and with the umbrellas opened over the outdoor tables to provide shade it was quite comfortable and pleasant.
I’m meeting up with a friend tomorrow morning, we’re driving to Simpsonville, SC for a model car show and swap meet. I’ve been selling some surplus from my model kit inventory on eBay for the last couple of months but I’ll go through my stash tonight and see if I can bring anything to sell. I also made a rather interesting model car purchase off eBay recently. Vintage race cars fascinate me, especially when they are unique in some respect. I have always wanted a model of a prewar German Auto Union Grand Prix racer but I was unaware of such a kit being available. I found a company from Italy selling a detailed scale model of the Auto Union and I managed to win an auction for one of their kits.
Here is a photo of one of the actual cars. The 1937 Auto Union Type C, the first successful mid-engine World Championship race car. While it’s not the most aesthetic of designs it appeals to the engineer in me for its simplicity and function. The shape is unusual enough that it will never be mistaken for anything else, and it’s quite historically significant.
My birthday is Monday. I’ll be 51 years old, I’m not sure if congratulations or condolences are in order. |
