Sabrina- A Review Not on The Show But The Mechanics

10/27/2018

I've watched the first few episodes of that new Sabrina show Netflix has come out with. And while I won't spoil anything, I just want to remark on the fact that the camera style is weird to say the least. And the first thing I noticed was that they clearly use the same videographers for their first venture, Riverdale. The show itself is quite dark, the colours mostly being blues, blacks, and greys. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing, however, it will probably make it difficult to watch during the day. I chose to watch it at night after work, so there was no problem. I also have a livingroom set back from windows, and natural light doesn't quite hit the screen of my computer. If it had been my TV, that would be a different story, I guess. I do give kudos to their ability to up the creep factor with the dark hues they've chosen. But the blurring around the edges of most of the scenes is kind of annoying. It makes me think there's a smear on my glasses, and there doesn't appear to be a trend to explain it away; it doesn't happen for every scene.  If it happened only when magical or spooky things were happening, then fine. But even when there doesn't appear to be anything of that sort going on, it shows up. Perhaps it will get better. And why does the setting of the high school come off as something straight from the seventies? I get not wanting to be exactly like the original adaptation made for TV, but the whole town appears to be stuck there.

Omg the blurry out of focus edges drove me nuts

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who thought this.

We watched the first episode, and it made both of us feel slightly sick. The blurring and warping is not helping anything, and even though the storyline was decent, we're not going to continue watching it.

I haven't had the urge to watch any more of it either. The film work is supposed to add to it, not distract and make the audience not want to watch more.
