Linguistics!

07/14/2009

begin.

Took an unannounced break for a month. I'm back. Heh.

Anyhoo, I've been getting more and more into linguistics lately. I love the English language and how beautiful it can be in the right hands. Just look at literature. What would I do without Robert Frost or Edgar Allen Poe? Oh man. I also realized that I love language in general. Foreign languages astound me. Sure, right now I am limited to French, but next year I'll be in Spanish as well! I hope to take some Latin at my damnable school before I graduate, but I fear their screwed up scheduling methods won't allow it. Ah well, we shall see.

I also took a brilliant survey just now to pass some time. HelloQuizzy.com had some personality tests I've taken. Looking on the site, I found this gem: "The Commonly Confused Words Test"

Do you use the second person possessive when you mean "you are"? How about sometimes saying "He's better then she is."? Well, then this quiz is NOT for you. Try out your grammar expertise. (Before you ask, this is a LOCATION NEUTRAL test. Some spellings are British, some are American. Some questions have more than one correct answer. If you speak English well in your native area, you should do well on this test.)

My results:

Your result for The Commonly Confused Words Test ...

English Genius
You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 100% Expert!
You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

Wow! 100%'s! I actually guessed on a few, like economic/economical. Post your results in the comments if you please! I'd love to know how you did.

end.

AH, I'VE DONE THAT ONE BEFORE, YO! THERE IS A QUESTION OR TWO THAT I DISAGREE WITH, OR RATHER THEY HAVE MORE THAN ONE POTENTIAL ANSWER, DEPENDING ON WHETHER YOU'RE USING THE LANGUAGE THAT IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTED IN MODERN DAY DICTIONARIES OR WHETHER YOU'RE INSISTING ONLY ON USING ONLY ORIGINAL MEANINGS. I TEND TO TAKE THE FORMER APPROACH, BECAUSE LANGUAGE IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING, AND I'M MORE OF A DESCRIPTIVE THAN PRESCRIPTIVE GRAMMARIAN (ALTHOUGH I DO LOVE TO CORRECT BLOOPERZ! ). BUT I THINK THAT IS MORE OF A BRITISH APPROACH, YO - A LOT OF AMERICANS HAVEN'T COME ACROSS IT. DO YOU LEARN ABOUT THE WHOLE PRESCRIPTIVE/DESCRIPTIVE DEBATE IN YOUR STUDIES? DO YOUR LECTURERS TAKE A PARTICULAR APPROACH? I FIND IN THE UK, LECTURERS OFTEN TAKE A 'PRESCRIPTIVIST IS WRONG; DESCRIPTIVIST IS RIGHT' VIEW, WHICH ALWAYS STRIKES ME AS QUITE CONTRADICTORY, BECAUSE THAT IN ITSELF A VERY PRESCRIPTIVIST THING TO SAY!

BY THE WAY, YOU CAN TOTALLY LEARN LATIN ONLINE ON FREE SITES - IT'S EASIER TO LEARN THAN MOST LANGUAGES BECAUSE THERE IS NO SPOKEN ELEMENT. ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE SELF-DISCIPLINED TO TEACH YOURSELF - I STARTED LEARNING IT BUT I TOTALLY LACK SELF-DISCIPLINE!
