“Yes mother, I’m leaving here in like ten minutes” she sighed in amusement. “Love you too, bye.” Dalila flopped on her bed looking at Violet.

“I think she’s anxious for you to be home.” she laughed.

“Yea, no shit. Call me if you need anything. I’ll miss you!” Dalila got up and hugged Violet.

“Me too.” she hugged back. “And give Bryce a swift kick in the ass for me, huh?” Vi smiled devilishly.

“Yeah. Right. He’ll be avoiding me like the plague.”

She hugged Violet again then took her last few bags down to her car. She found Jared leaning against it, with his hands in the pockets of his jeans. He really is very cute she sighed.

“Hey kid.” he smiled.

“Hey” she smiled back at him. Their friendship was so comfortable and easy.

“Thought I’d come and see you off.”

“Well you’re just in time.”

His hands went to her hips, pulled her close to his body. Dalila’s eyes were wide. His eyes were a deep shade of grey she had never seen before. His mouth dropped down to hers, her brain was clear this time. His tongue slid over her lips and into her mouth. Dalila put her hands on his shoulders, closed her eyes and kissed back while her heart pounded in her head. He pulled back abruptly, his hands slid down her hips.

“Just something to remember me by while you’re away.” a crooked smile went over his lips then he turned and walked to his car, leaving Dalila speechless.

Bryce had heard Dalila was due back in town today, her parents had invited his family over for a small dinner party. He tried to have plans for today but they all fell through. He was supposed to work but then he got a call from his boss, Jerry last night and said that he didn’t need him and wasn’t sure how much he could work him this summer.

“Mom, really. I’m an adult. I’m pretty sure I can make decisions on my own.” he groaned. His mother arched an eyebrow at him and gave him a look only a mother could give. Bryce sighed, admitting defeat. He walked off to get dressed.

An hour later Bryce and his parents walked up to a house that used to feel like a second home to him, but now it felt like a prison. Soon he’d see her, she’d be beautiful of course and most importantly, she would no longer be his to hold. He was frowning and couldn’t shake off the blues. His father knocked on the door and Bryce blew out a sigh of relief when Amy answered the door.

“So good to see you” she motioned them inside. There were at least ten other people here, but only one he wanted to avoid.

But there she was… Her long brown hair was curled at the end, pilled on top of her head, she wore a light purple summer dress that stopped at the knees with a smile on her face. She turned and spotted him. His heart slammed against his chest, it was hard to breathe. Then she crossed the room to him. Since retreating was out of the question he braced himself, for what he wasn’t sure.

“Mr. and Mrs. Centry… Bryce. So happy you could make!” She hugged Bryce’s parents then turned to him. “I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

“We wouldn’t miss it for the world my dear!” Patricia said and gave her a small pat on the back. “We’re so glad to see you. How’s college?”

“Very busy” she chuckled. “I’m glad to be home though. This will probably be the last summer I spend here until I graduate.”

“Oh?” Tony asked, surprised. Her parents hadn’t mentioned that.

“Yeah, very hectic classes and a new part time job.” she sighed. “Doesn’t leave much time for anything else I’m afraid.” her eyes flashed to Bryce’s quickly then dropped them to the floor.

“Well I’m sure it’ll pay off in the end. Now I must find your mother so we can gush over how grown up you are.”

When Bryce’s parents walked away Dalila felt the tension between them grow. She wanted to say something, just to clear the air but words never came. Her mind was blank.

“So…” Bryce rocked on his heals. “Glad to be home?”

“Yes. I didn’t realize how much I missed this place until I got here.” Another awkward silence. “How are you?”

“I’m good.” he lied.

“That’s good.” she sighed. He looked good, a little rough around the edges, but good. Every part of her yearned to touch him, just to see if the spark was still there. Instead Dalila took a step back. “I should go mingle… We’ll catch up in a bit?”

Bryce only nodded, then she walked away feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders.
