How much money will it take to make boredom worth it?

10/04/2018

I have probably the best job I've ever had. This is a dream job. We support 99% of the Fortune 100, and 80-something % of the rest of the Fortune list. I make over triple what I was making at my last job, in the field that I want to be in.

But with everything that's happened, with all the money I'm making to make several, much needed upgrades to my life, I don't know if I'm grateful enough to accept the boredom that comes with sitting around for hours waiting for people to support. On paper, it sounds like a dream to sit around and get paid lots and lots of money to surf the internet all day, but... that's not what I wanted to do. I genuinely love this field, and I want to be neck deep in computer parts and ethernet cables. I want to be working on several projects, and even moreso, I want to be able to prove on paper, with statistics, that I bring in revenue AND save money for the company. Or else I don't feel like I will justify the sick paycheck I get.

I'm out of here in about an hour, and my guess is, it'll be the longest hour in history.

But if you get to read Bloop while you're working, that might ease the boredom! 😄

I mean, are they hiring? Perhaps in the Gainesville area? 😂

I completely agree. I'm always aghast at people who come to work and don't do their job while they're there. What are they DOING all day? It takes a lot of effort to kill 8 hours a day every day, especially if you're stuck at a desk.

Keep the high paying job and start writing a book or a blog related to your field. Best of both worlds.

That's actually a great idea. Instead of writing a book about something (I don't have the chops), I could probably do some self-projects, and maybe write some training articles or something.

Can you do your passion outside of work? I mean like maybe side jobs

I'm not sure, but I think I would be violating my company's non compete.

Yeah, that would be tiresome for me. I have never been good at working for other people though. With what I do now, I work when and how I want to, provided I'm still serving my clients. But if I have down time and nothing pressing to do, I can work on marketing or watch Desperate Housewives, which I've been doing lately. It would be difficult for me to just sit and wait for the time clock to run out.

I hear you. I mean, I'm not just watching paint dry, I'm surfing the internet. The other day, I caught up on a few episodes of Master Chef. It's just not really all that fulfilling, and makes me feel like a shitty worker.
