Harbingers

03/02/2009

The news was a harbinger of events to come....

The Mexico missions trip has been called off due to the violence there. Ergh. I was just getting really psyched up for the trip too. I guess they are going to try to plan a trip to Florida instead in the 2 weeks before we leave. Nothing is planned for certain at this point. I might go to Florida if the cost isn't more than the Mexico trip. It won't be the same for me but I will get over it. I do miss body surfing in the waves at Daytona Beach however. Haha. That was great fun.

Pros and cons of Mexico and Florida trip:

MEXICO:
(Pros) Experiencing the culture and people of Saltillo again firsthand, Working with our hands to better someone's life or to encourage others, for me--a special bond to the people I have grown to know and love over the years, the marketplace, the opportunity to use my major (spanish), Etc...

(Cons) The cost & the time off of work without pay

FLORIDA:
(Pros) Bonding experience for group, helping others via service projects, fun times/activities

(Cons) Minimal to no contact with others outside of the group, the cost, the time off of work without pay, for me--seems like an "emptier" experience (inwardly)

I understand why Koinonia came to the decision to not travel to Mexico but I can't help but be disappointed. The people in Saltillo and their culture are a part of my heart and soul. I'm always going to be more attached to that trip VS. the Colorado or Florida trip we usually take instead. The last (and only) time I've been to Florida, we helped clean up campgrounds. We basically raked the heck out of that place. The only place there were leaves on the ground was in the woods. I'm not even joking. We went to DisneyWorld (most of us--I stayed at the hotel and swam/ate dinner with 2 others who stayed behind that day) and to Daytona Beach as well. It was more a "fun" trip rather than a "mission" trip. It is touted as a missions trip also which I find a bit misleading. Don't get me wrong, it IS a missions trip. It is definitely not an intense one that changes lives though. Mexico changes lives, in general. I know it changed mine in ways.

I had to get that all out in the open. I bet you are all wondering how you got lucky enough to get 2 entries in 1 day from me. I rarely update on here anymore. I apologize for that. However, I'm sure no one wants to hear what my life consists of: "I'm tired & I worked a lot today" on a daily basis. Haha. Well, I will talk to all of you later. When that will be, I have no idea...but it will get done. Have a great day! Vaya con Dios!--Robyn

i kind of heard that a lot of trips to mexico were probably going to have to be cancelled, but i don't watch the news enough, so i really don't know what's going on. i'll have to look it up.

i can see why you would consider not going on the florida trip.
