Sex and the City

01/18/2011

Title: Sex And The City
Author: Candace Bushnell
Pages: 245
Publisher: Abacus (2009 Edition, Paperback)
Genre: General Fiction
Dates Read: Saturday 8 January to Wednesday 12 January 2011

Thoughts: Carrie, Miranda and their friends are successful New Yorkers enjoying the high life. They’re also trying to find Mr. Right in a city that seems to be full of Mr. Right Nows.

I went through a stage a few months ago of watching old episodes of the TV show, and that sparked my interest in tracking down the book. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but once I got into the book I had a hard time putting it down. The chapters are separated into bite-sized chunks, useful when I didn’t feel up to reading too much in one sitting. Life’s been rather hectic recently, and I wasn’t really in the mood for an in-depth read (I was hoping to read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry this month, but ended up putting it down after 109 pages. I was really struggling to concentrate).

One thing that surprised me about this book was that I was expecting it to be rather fluffy. The copy in front of me has a one line review on the front cover from the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, referring to the book as “Jane Austen with a martini”. Which I agree with - it’s an intriguing, humorous book and certainly worth reading. I’m glad I picked it up.
