Renewing a pledge

01/01/2009

A resolution:
commitment to change
finding things wrong with your previous self.
The sweet rationalization to hide the truth
(the lies we tell ourselves)
This year, I’ll be better
this year, I’ll be good
time is running out,
but before the end I make this promise.

A coward’s promise,
to be forgotten before enacted,
before forced to face the truth;
your one chance to feel vindicated.

Without resolve your resolution falls apart;
with resolve you need not new resolution,
no regrets, no empty wishes, no rationalizations.
No need for lies that comfort.

Renewing a pledge would be better,
showing your resolve to truth,
embracing your actions - not regretting them
embracing your philosophical ideals.
Do you have the courage?

Look yourself in the mirror,
to see yourself not anew, but as you;
the real and undaunted you,
if you ever truly existed.

------------

My pledge to integrity:
My pledge to intensity:
My pledge to excellence:

I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live my life for another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

*A new year's toast to Ayn Rand, my mentor*
