First week (and a bit)

First Week (and a bit)
Wow, I have been lazy for a while
Well, I made it to Ocean University 中国海洋大学, other than the predictable fumbles with accomodation staff, due to the fact that they speak no English, enrolling was relatively simple~ China is very big on bureacracy, I have realised this and by god (any god) I hate it. I met Louise at the airport on the Thursday, so since then I've had someone to pester ^^ It makes it ever so much more fun~
Unfortunately last Sunday my purse got nicked whilst I was on the bus. It's a zip-up bag and was behind me for literally 5 minutes whilst Louise was looking at me... and they still managed to take my ourse out my bag without anyone noticing. Anyone meaning me or Louise, I sincerely doubt none of the Chinese people behind me noticed -_- Unfortunately out here i will never be a student, I will always be the white-girl (white=rich idiot), so whatever happens I'm always going to be targetted by scam-artists and pick-pockets. It's frustrating. Fortunately there was a total of 3元 in the purse, so he maybe got a dumpling out of me, but generally Chinese people operate in cash and foreign cards won't look right if a Chinese person tries to use them...
The annoying thing is that I was steadily withdrawing money from my account every day in order to pay the school fees. So I have muchos monies in zee bank... I just can't get at them. Arrrrrrghhhh!!! The accounting secretary was very happy for me to pay the fees next month, but the problem is: in order to get a student visa (I'm currently on a tourist visa that expires in 20 days) I need a receipt for payment of school fees (proof of student-ness).... PROBLEM. Fortunately my parents (LOVE) have sent my replacement bank card out, but there are problems, like the fact it's sent via special delivery - I spent 10 minutes trying to ask the receptionist in our accomodation building whether I'd have to sign for the package (UK practice, god knows what happens in China) and she just repeated over and over: No, you just write your name in our mail-book to show you've taken the parcel *head-desk* People are pretty self-obsessed here. Everything either relates to them or it's completely untranslatable <__<

Classes started last week and I've been in Intermediate - It's hard and I don't know so many words, but we seemed to strike lucky with our teachers because they're all really animated, the other classes seem to sit in a stupor for the morning... So I figured I'll just have to work hard after lesssons ^____^ Yeah. That can happen. Shun the non-believers!!!!

Making Chinese friends is going to be interesting... International students live in International Accomodation, have lessons with other international students and all the other Chinese students are on a seperate campus - all the international students encompassing Koreans and Ruskis It's not very conducive to learning Chinese - one of the other English girls has moved in to a flat with 5 other Chinese people, apparently she literally walked in to an estate agent and said: I want a room in a flat with lots of Chinese people. *impressed* Apparently it's a really nice flat as well~

So far we've located a few shops for cheap clothing <3 But otherwise electronics seem to be a pesky item to find on the fallen-off-the-back-of-a-lorry market Qingdao is quite a nice city, especially in the evenings, but during the day it can get very hot and opressive (weather-wise, no word-twisting please -_-)~ Lao Shan Mountain 崂山 is right next to the campus (shan actually means mountain, so that's saying Lao mountain-mountain o.O) - It looks tres fun, hopefully we'll make it all the way up soon ^^ Louise was a bit (majorly) jet-lagged when we tried to climb it

Huzzah for a new week of 8am starts! -__________-; We pick our elective classes this week, like Chinese Cooking and Taiqi 台基传, there's also a taekwondo 台卷到 group right next to my dormitory... I feel such a conveniently-placed anger-control group must be taken advantage of ^_^

That is awesome that you are goign to university there and have classes the Taekwondo sounds awesome and should be lots of fun. Chinese cooking you never know you may like it. What is your major going to be while you are there studying?
That really bites about your purse being stolen there and I would imagine it is hard to get stuff to eat and function while you don't have anything at all Good luck and I hope your new card comes soon so you can make better arrangments with school to be on a student visa asap!!!
Take care and Have a great day.
Love,
Jess
