♥ Inspire and Unite TOTW 214

05/17/2009

Theme of the week #214
How do you feel about the Miss USA 2009 Pageant, and Miss California's answer to Perez Hilton's questions about gay marriage?

I didn't watch the show itself because I was without cable at the time. But sure enough since the pageant it has been plastered all over televisions everywhere the controversy that the answer Miss California gave has caused.

I think first you have to look at the whole picture here in it's entirety. These pageants were created originally before being a platform for these women as something inspire and unite a country. A fun pastime, that lets face it a big majority of our people have come to participate in year in and year out. As a little girl I remember watching these pageants thinking how beautiful these women were and how I want a big crown like that. Yes I was younger but they are looked up to. They have jobs and go to school, the balance life with their pageantry dreams or however you may want to word it. I don't necessarily think I would want to be paraded around like a prize in front of people but to each their own decisions and life. And I think if that is truly their goal in mind when they go into these things they deserve it first and foremost before anyone else on that stage.

But if you look at it from that prospective - to inspire and unite - then I think the question lies there. It was not her belief on gay marriage but instead the way she worded it. I do see how saying it like that she could alienate a group of people on a national level and television and I would personally think that you would be prepared for something like that . That was a very thought provoking question and I think that without singling out the gay community she could have answered it much better then she did in a course to change the outcome. That is one of those dodge the bullet questions. She started off great but it should have went something like this

" I think it's great that we can live in a country where we have been given the freedom to choose how we want to live and who we want to love. Each person and state has been given that power and as Vermont is the fourth state to exercise those rights choosing to allow gay marriages I think each state has been given the right and ability to do just the same based on what is right for them."

Yes. I know it is a bit bullet dodging but sometimes you have to in order to keep a certain image. That's like the presidential election - when you are trying to gain so many people's votes and popularity you are not going to single out a group of people because that just may be the group that would have given you the win. Basically she is saying she herself would not choose to be gay, not that she is not tolerant or does not like anyone in that community, but she harbored a certain feeling in her answer that gave America the wrong idea. And that is defintely not inspiring or uniting in my opinion .

Do I think that it is such a huge issue she should be stripped of her crown. That I am semi impartial on. She was only the first runner up, I don't think it is as big of a deal as if she had won the entire pageant. The judging was not performed until after her answer and her scores still obviously out shined those of others. I think if there were a problem it should have been addressed before giving her the crown. Unless she was a wild party animal not representing the crown she was presented with that night I don't believe they should be able to take it back because since receiving it she has done nothing wrong.

I don't personally agree with her about gay marriage so I would have never answered like that in the first place. If everyone is allowed free speech, and we scream of equality in our country and freedom of religion . . . then why should marriage be any different. I do believe in a god. But where in the bible if this is a majority Christian nation , does it give us the right to throw stones at others or choose the way they live. Lead by example, and that would not be an example. I have both friend and family in the gay community and want nothing more then for them to be happy with who they are and be able to love and raise the family of their choosing. To wish anything less for them because of who they choose to love would be unethical to me whether I choose to live the same way or not. I love them all the same, and I love them no less.

i don't think they should be asking questions like that for pageants. it just makes people go crazy if they don't answer the way everyone else wants them to answer.
