First Beat

First Beat

my fingers trace the soft planes of your face
from your temple over your brow to your cheek
my eyes grow soft with familiarity
as my fingertips brush against your lips
I feel as though I can see into you
depths of your soul abandoned with time
and though these hidden pieces of being
could prove dangerous
my heart bares no hesitation
no doubt against such kind soul
I want to show you the things you've hidden
things you no longer believed true
my fingers are tracing along your jaw
our skin electricly charged
as my pulse races onward
I am searching in your eyes
for a former clarity burried beneath betrayal
my hand moves across your neck
and I am trying to count each passing moment
ingrain each spent second
your hand is searching
wandering over my limbs searching for a free hand
and I am shutting my eyes
trying to convince myself we see the same future
my free hand is still searching
for the one thing that holds me to you
my fingers are tracing over your chest
my palm is pressing against your center
and I am letting my soul look into your depths
still looking for any sign of hesitation
electric flowing through us frays my concentration
and I am left with the feel of your heart
it beats a steady rhythm much like my own
and my hand is yearning for that next beat
my soul reaching out for that next shock
I no longer see the "what ifs" or "could have beens"
I am here, and you, you being so weary with experience
so tired of repition, is opening like the first spring blossom
to accept all consequences
to take the first breath of life
fore I knew what you meant to me
long before you showed my heart how to take it's first beat
