How to select the correct keyboard configuration.

02/07/2009

Many people have a problem with their keyboard that they never bother to correct - because they don't know how!

If you find that some keys aren't as they appear to be, you may need to configure your keyboard settings. For example, if your AT symbol turns out to be double quotes, and your double quotes turn out to be the AT symbol, it's a sure bet that you're using the wrong configuration.

To change your keyboard configuration, follow the following instructions.

» Windows XP
» Windows Vista

For Windows XP
1. Click Start, and go to Control Panel.
2. Look for and double click the icon labelled 'Regional and Language Options' - it should look like a globe.
3. Select the 'Languages' tab.
4. Click 'Details'.
5. Look in the 'Installed services' section to make sure that your local keyboard layout is installed. If it isn't, click Add to install it to your machine.
6. Select the default input language using the drop down box in the 'Default input language' section.
7. Click OK, and then OK again.

For Windows Vista
1. Click Start, and go to Control Panel.
2. Type 'keyboard' in the search box to the top right.
3. In the 'Regional and Language Options' section, click 'Change keyboard or other input methods'.
4. Click 'Change keyboards'.
5. Look in the 'Installed services' section to make sure that your local keyboard layout is installed. If it isn't, click Add to install it to your machine.
6. Select the default input language using the drop down box in the 'Default input language' section.
7. Click OK, and then OK again.

You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

I HAVE A NEW QUESTION, YO! IS VISTA BETTER THAN XP? OR IS IT MORE TROUBLE THAN IT'S WORTH, AND IT IS BETTER TO STICK WITH XP?***

You want Windows 7. It just replaced Windows Vista.

And depending on your system's capabilities, yes it's "better" than XP. If you're going to move away from XP though, I'd switch to Windows 7 rather than Windows Vista.

Windows 7 at it's core IS Vista, however they've made some upgrades, it performs better, is more stable, and worked out most of the Vista bugs.

I just got a new laptop. I was terrified of Vista. I love it now. Vista is the way to go. To be honest though the only difference I hacve really noticed is I can see wwhat is in my minimized windows and trhe startt menu is really neat.

and..the searching for 'keyoard' didnt help (I have vista). it just brings up the icon for my keybord. i had to type in 'languages' to get to that window..

Just so you know, it's the same for Windows Vista. I went to the Control Panel and that icon was there. So don't make people do more work than they have to.

I'm like Puck. Well, not entirely cos there's only one Puck. But I tend to fix things by fiddling about and changing settings without really having a clue what I am doing. Eventually this seems to solve the problem but often presents new problems. So I just go on fiddling and fixing my way out of trouble. Once the number of new problems reaches critical mass, I junk the old computer and buy a new one. It's expensive but, hey, it works for me, baby!
