Vegetarian

05/19/2009

Now then here we go. First rant since the big bloop crash of err 2009 (I think). Vegetarian right, what does this mean to you?

a) A person that does not eat any meat products.

b) A person who doesn't eat red meat but eats fish and chicken.

c) A person who eats fish but no other meat.

If you answered b or c go stick your head in a mincer. Seriously. I was doing some research today as I have a lot of friends who are vegetarian. I'm not a vegetarian myself but I can go a meal without eating meat.

Anyway in my research today I went to the Coca-Cola website. After sifting through 40 random questions I came to the all important is Coca-Cola vegetarian? After which was a statement:

None of the products of Coca-Cola great Britain contain ingredients derived from animals. As some practicing vegetarians also avoid fish products as well, it is important to note that some of our products contain minute amounts of fish gelatine, which is used as a stabiliser for the beta-carotene colour. These products are:

Fanta and Fanta Orange Zero

Lilt and Lilt Zero

Five Alive: Squash Citrus Burst

Five Alive: Squash Tropical Hit

Kia-Ora

Minute Maid Orange and Passion Fruit

Schweppes Slimline Orange Crush

End of excerpt.

Now that worries me that a multi-national company doesn't know what a vegetarian is. It is almost as worrying as my former manager at Tesco telling me that Tuna is suitable for Vegetarians. Still he was a complete idiot. To which his colleague then chimed in saying (and I quote) "Fish isn't meat.....it's................well it isn't meat"

My reply was simple. Do fish flower and bloom? Or do they move about like an animal? Fish = animal = meat.

Mental Note to self: You may feel a bit thick sometimes but there are always people worse off. As I say I'm not vegetarian but the labelling on products is chronic.

It's true, there's vegetarians who eat fish and some who don't. Personally I think fish counts as meat as it comes from something living, but it's true, I know vegetarians who stick by it, in fact. Known as Pescetarianism.
The fact they're using fish in those drinks worries me though.

*applauds*

If someone is going to be a vegetarian, they should do it properly. Otherwise, what's the point? Someone told me once that its OK to eat fish because fish don't have feelings whereas cows, sheep, etc do!
