back to school

01/19/2011

Yesterday was my first day back to school (YAYY)

I have Psychology, then English, then about an hour and a half break, then Yoga.

I have the same Psyc teacher as last term, Wendy, and we just went over the syllabus and she talked some about the class.. It was my first class so I found out that for this term, the teachers aren't allowed to print out the syllabus and hand it out anymore. She said paper is the school's #1 expense so they're trying to cut back, "go green", and make the students more computer friendly. -- In other words, we have to pay to print out our own if we want a hard copy, or we can check it online. We don't have a printer so I think I'll just go on the website and write down the schedule for each of my classes. Each syllabus is about 13 pages long and says the same exact thing (no cell phones, when the last day to drop the class is, other school policies..) The only thing we really need is the schedule. -- Oh.. Wendy took roll and saw my name, recognized it from last term, and commented to the class that my hair looks great and it threw her off because it looked "totally different" last term lol .. She said we'll have 3 exams and 2 papers due for this class

My English teacher seems nice.. He's really funny and very into facts vs opinions. He's a middle aged black man, he said he's been teaching since '85 on all levels including University. He had us go around the room and introduce ourselves, saying our name, our major, and where we see ourselves in 10 years. He told us what he wanted us to tell him and then started off by STARING at this poor girl for seriously 2 minutes till she said anything lol she kept looking at him then looking away, looking around the class lol it was kinda obvious he wanted her to introduce herself but she didn't get the hint and he didn't say anything, just stared at her till she finally got it... It's a full class of 30 and only about 5 or 6 of us knew what our major was and where we wanted to be in 10 years.. Most people just said "Hi my name is so-and-so, I don't know what my major is, in 10 years hopefully I'll know!" lol ... Then he told us we'll have 5 papers to write throughout the term, and asked us to think of controversial topics. He gave us a couple minutes to think then called on people to say their topic, wrote it on the board, and at the end we got to vote on what 5 we wanted to write a paper about. Nobody raised their hand, he picked the guy behind me first (by name) then he picked me (by name) and I think he only remembered the names of like 3 other students. Every topic anyone gave he asked questions about... "Do you mean this, or do you mean this?" The topic I gave was gay marriage, he said --on many topics-- the paper would not be about whether or not we agree on it, it would be on the facts about it. He asked if I was talking about a ceremony or about the legal right, the legal contract that married people enter into. I said the legal right, the contract, because really, anyone can go have a ceremony, gay people are fighting for theirs to be recognized by the law. So he said OK and wrote it on the board. The 5 topics that were chosen by the class were "The Idiot Box" (<- Media influence on children), abortion (<- not your opinions on it, but facts about the current laws), gay marriage, religion in world history (<- this sounds hard), and intolerence in public schools. We ran out of time, so I guess discussion will resume tomorrow.

Yoga is just what I thought it would be, we're just doing poses, not really getting into the whole thing. She seems nice. She's Indian and said she just got back from a vaca to India, I guess she went for the winter break. Out mid-term will be 10 essay style questions about yoga that we'll take home and google and write a short essay about. The final will be a 2 page written essay about how this yoga class affected us. 60% of our grade is showing up and participating, 20% is the mid-term, and 20% is the final. Sounds like an easy A.
