When I Am Old, I Shall Wear Midnight

No More

11/02/2010

So, the rain has caught you now. It’s destroyed the outer shell, that oh so delicate shield that had been able to protect you from everything that the world could throw at you, with this downpour and now you stand under the muted light of the streetlamp overhead. The cracks show, the raindrops have slipped in between them as your body curls in on itself. But it can’t allow you to disappear.

You are still visible. You are too apparent to all who pass you by. Nothing can be done for this and so you stand, waiting for…

But what are you waiting for? There is no knight in shining armour that will come galloping up on a grey horse to extend not only his kindness and protection, but also the simple warmth that you thrive on. That anyone would believe was their right.

It has been too long since this has been granted to you. That memory is nothing more than a little lone bird twittering from the far reaches of your mind. You catch a glimpse of it every now and then, but it is never within your grasp. It never comes close enough for you to feel the heart beat within your hands and for it to unfold long enough for it to enjoyed.

There’s nothing.

Nothing left. Nothing to strive for. The rain has stripped away all of your defences and now you must open yourself to what will come. It has been waiting in the far darkness for this opportunity and you…

Its fingers are already slowly pulling off what is left of your shield. Its already creeping in and slowly feeding on you. You grow weak, not only to your voice but also to your soul.

It’s all falling apart as you close your eyes and wait. Wait for it to end. Wait for there to be truly nothing left.

Goodnight.

Goodbye.

See you on the Other Side.
