Wisdom Teeth

10/06/2013

So this week has been removal of wisdom teeth week...

Slight back story, I do not like dentists, not the people per say, but going to the dentists. Basically they have trouble numbing me, they often have to spread the local anaesthetic so that the entire side of my face, including nose, ear and eye is numb before they can do a simple filling, so hearing that my wisdom teeth had to come out was scary (to say the least!)

Well at first I was adamant that I needed a general anaesthetic to do this or I would run away screaming, but I also decided due to many reasons that I needed it done ASAP so I was persuaded to have IV sedation.

The pre-op, supposed to take 30 mins, took an hour as I asked a LOT of questions, however, you can't just tell me "we are going to use IV sedation" I need to know what drugs you are using, is it a continuous or one shot kinda thing, side effects etc

So first the refused my request for pre-op meds to calm me down (I was seriously concerned that I would run away before they could do it) and I annoyed the tech as I refused to sign the consent form as the procedure hadn't been written in... "the dentist will write it in when he gets here" Ummmm NO I am not signing consent to ANYTHING!

So it was all set up for Monday morning, I spent the weekend, preparing (and crying haha) getting in baby food and jelly. Went out for dinner the night before so I would have a yummy last meal!

On the morning, I was pretty much freaking out, Monte had to take the day off work to be my escort. We got to the dental clinic and I was fine (on the surface anyways) until they called me in and I was a flood of tears... how embarrassing!

They took me in, got me hooked up to all the machines, I asked another 15 questions I had forgotten to ask before, while Monte rolled his eyes at me. (He dreads when we do get pregnant as I will be checking on exactly what, how and why people are doing things) They got the IV in and gave me the first dose, its all a bit fuzzy I remember some things, like aware of pulling etc but not caring at all! I had a few crazy dreams, including some bright red rabbits?!?!

Eventually they uncovered my eyes and I woke up, I had demanded that I would keep my teeth (they are mine, why shouldn't I keep them!) Soon Monte was in the room, they got me in a wheelchair and wheeled me to the car. I was a little annoyed they didn't change out the gauze before I left as I was wheeled past with gauze hanging out and it was so blood filled, the gauze outside of my mouth was red, YUK!

I got home and had drilled into Monte that no matter how sleepy I was, I was to eat and take my meds before I slept, well I wasn't out of it, no thinking I was in Hogwarts for me I ate something...carefully and took my meds and uploaded a photo of my teeth to Facebook (if I have to suffer having them out, everyone else can suffer seeing them) I napped for an hour or so that day and used a large bandage to keep fresh icepacks on my face all day and evening. Finally I went to bed (using my 3 pillows haha) and awaited to see the horror hamster face in the morning....

Well I woke up and no puffy face... no pain either! Some discomfort but nothing to write home about! And thats kinda how it has been. I removed the original gauze an hour after I got home and had no further bleeding, no swelling, took pain meds for a few days but never felt any real pain!

I am almost a week out and so pretty much over the risk of dry socket... my WORST fear! I am still on soft foods and no soda and straws (yes I know I could have been eating normal food for days now, I just wanted to be extra careful) I am just sooooo thankful it has been an easy recovery so far! I have only noticed being very tired, sleeping 12 hours at night and napping an hour or so a day and some headaches that I believe are from clenching my jaw but I cannot complain!

So now to share my wisdom with you!

lol, now you know you are getting a red rabbit from me at some point. I know you were anxious but you handled it like a champ!

I had one of mine out over a month ago - it's not a pleasant experience! But don't be alarmed if you start to get little sharp bits poking out of your gums - they're tiny slithers of bone and they'll come out on their own (or you can get your dentist to remove them). Gross and weird but they freaked me out so just thought I'd warn you!

Ooooh that doesn't sound great! I have been so so good, haven't allowed my tongue to explore back there... until today! Eww indeed plus there are still a few stiches to come out!

My wisdom teeth have all grown in and didn't have to be pulled. This makes me really glad since I have heard some horror stories. Yay for small teeth and a large mouth!
I'm glad that yours was an easy time. Nothing like going around looking like someone punched you out, eh?

Haha I didn't even get swollen! And I did have it easy as all mine had come through straight... but needed a cavity or 2 so they decided best to get rid of them as they can be hard to fill!

I can relate to not taking freezing well. I had a root canal done and they couldn't freeze me for the life of me. I got so angry I told them to just do the damn procedure (you can imagine how pleasant that was!) I think the rage helped me through the pain tho, lol. I had my wisdom teeth out about 10 years ago and had to have emergency surgery so I understand the anxiety. Thankfully you've had an easy recovery!

Eww. I hate teeth.

That is completely inappropriate that they tried to consent you without the procedure written in. Not to mention the person doing the consenting should be the person doing the procedure, not a tech.

Red rabbits? They didn't give you ketamine did they? Usually a bit of midazolam would do!

About the consent... I was soooo mad they tried doing that! They know I am medically trained why did they even attempt it! Anyways I told them off and am pondering making a more formal comment as that is just not appropriate!

And I had midazolam but apparently they had to give me quite a few doses as I was still too aware after the first dose ... or two!

Yeah there were bright red rabbits hopping all over the dentist office, quite amusing indeed!

Overall it sounds like the procedure went well. At least its over now! I had all four of mine taken out back in high school. I still remember waking up after the procedure walking down the hall with a lady who was barely 5ft holding onto me. I'm 5'9" so I'm still amazed by how she got me all the way to a recovery chair. lol
