disclaimer

These are my opinions. Comments are welcome only if they can be written in an intelligent way and not in elementary "You're stupid blah blah blah" terms. Please don't attack me for what I believe. And for the record, no I don't hate Muslims. Quite a few of my close friends are Muslims.

In light of the recent attacks in Mumbai, I think that yes the United States has achieved something in the "War On Terror"; they achieved the ability to piss off an entire people even more in these past 4 years than I could believe was possible. In all honesty, I don't think anything can be done to guarantee any short term advance in the ridding the world of terrorism and long term would be VERY long term. Not only that but "War on Terror" is so politically incorrect. It's like the saying, 'One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.' so we call them terrorists and they call us terrorists. They are fighting for what they see as their freedom and we are fighting for what we say as freedom. The two sides will never meet.
I think that the problem is we're fighting against a people who declared a Holy war against us. After 9/11, Osama bin Laden quoted many parts of the Qu'ran which backed up his actions as necessary and in step with the teachings of Allah. The Qu'ran quite clearly states that, unless a person is a believer in Allah and a follower of the Qu'ran, then they are an unbeliever and must be killed. Not only that, but it goes farther to say that one does not fight then they too will be punished by Allah. Bin Laden also quoted the hadith by Sahih al-Bukhari in which states 'The Hour [of Judgment] will not be established until you fight with the Jews [and kill them all].'
It's shocking, I think but that really is what this war boils down to. They attacked us because we are seen as unbelievers in their eyes and the Qu'ran quite specifically tells them to attack and kill such people. We're fighting back, not only because they attacked us, but because in our view what they do is monstrous. Honour killings, unequality, female mutilation [though not all of Islam follows female mutilation], we look at these things in horror and want it to end, but it is their religion and their way of life. I think that, in contrast to most of Europe, most of America sees that this is a religious war. It's like what Ayaan Hirsi Ali says in her book Infidel. In response to the 9/11 attacks, one of her colleagues says; "It's so weird, isn't it, all these people saying this has to do with Islam?" To which Ali replied; "But it is Islam. This is based in belief. This is Islam." She kept trying to get people to understand that these attacks were religiously based, but no one wanted to listen.
I don't think we can ever rid the world of "terror", at least not until the End Times. Peace might be accomplished for a short while, but I don't think very long because the West is still considered infidels and al Qaeda still believes all infidels need to be exterminated.

I have read the Qu'ran, and am unfamiliar with the bit that says "unless a person is a believer in Allah and a follower of the Qu'ran, then they are an unbeliever and must be killed." Muhammed taught respect for other monotheistic religions, such as Christianity and Judaism. It is extremist interpretations on both sides which put the " Qu'ran says muslims must kill everyone" slant on things I tend to find.

Muslims did not proclaim war on us. A very small extremist subsection of their religion attacked the west on september 11th. To say "this is islam" is even more uneducated an assertion than announcing "Christians declared a holy war on Britain, when the IRA attacked in the 80s/90s. All Christians are therefore bad and must suffer! Let's get 'em guys!" Which must piss off Muslims, because a lot of uneducated Westerners really do see September 11th that way. Have you read the Kite Runner? Sounds silly but that helped me understand that only a very small percentage of Islam/Afghanis/Pakistanis agree with what small extremist groups are perptrating in their name. x
