hello, it's me. [question]

12/14/2015

i've started on a baby registry. i feel about as weird making it as i did with our wedding registry; wondering if people are going to judge my requests, feeling kind of selfish about the whole thing. that said, we've just announced the pregnancy and already 3 or 4 people have asked me what i need or when my shower will be. i have generous, caring friends and family.
i also figured that if i started it now, and built slowly, i wouldn't be so overwhelmed. there are so many choices out there, from what products i want to use, to the various bells and whistles on any given brand vs. any other. i've always been practical (and budget-conscious) so i'm trying to remind myself that i can stick to the basics and don't need every "must have" that whatever marketing firm is raving about. at the end of the day, when i come home from the hospital baby needs a place to sleep, some travel gear, basic onesies/sleepers, and diapers, and we can build from there.
that said, i know there are a lot of mamas on bloop: what's something that you love or used with your little one? or that you think would have been a great gift? i know that a lot of things that work for one family (or even one child) don't work for another - for instance, i know i'd like some sort of baby-wearing device/carrier, and those seem to be a very personal preference thing. i'm just looking to get the ball rolling, and find a happy medium between "oh we don't really need anything" (obviously not true) and "i'll need one of everything, in the most expensive brand" (also, not true).

I don't think anyone judges what you put on your baby registry. If you're making it for Target and you go in store, you get a free gift. I honestly stuck to the basics this time around.

-Crib
-Hip height dresser with changing pad on top
-Glider/rocking recliner
-Good organization system for the closet or dresser for all the little things babies wear, haha
-Travel system car seat/stroller - I have a Britax and LOVE it. My stroller is easy to open with one hand, its a 3 wheel and easy to maneuver.
-Pack 'n play OR a bassinet... pack 'n plays last longer, ours is by our bed and we can take it with us on trips since we travel a lot
-Swing
-Bouncer - These two may not be necessary right away, though I suggest a swing right away... Ev is 3 months this week and LOVES her bouncer.
- A good diaper bag. This is SO ESSENTIAL! Well, I go places a lot so I needed an organized bag. I went through like, 5 different ones with Ella until I said screw it and changed back to my purse. I got a good bag with Ev and I've loved it since I bought it!
-Blankets. Lots of blankets. You'll be surprised how many times you have to wash one because of pee or poop or spit up, lol!
-Gown sleepers are the best. You don't have to worry about unbuttoning the whole sleeper to get to their diap, you just pull it up! I thought it was ridiculous how many I had, until I realized how awesome they are!
Definitely a baby carrier. I have a Tula with an infant insert. I loveee it. Of course, they're a little more expensive, but not a ton more compared to an Ergo. I hunted Tula resale sites until I found mine. (I'll get pics if you want to see, I got a print that my husband would wear, too). Then I got custom suck pads and hoodie hood because I wanted them, lol. Mostly since we live in Sunny SoCal and a hoodie hood is essential compared to just the regular hood they have. A lot of people get a sling wrap for the first month or so, then move on to a carrier when they have more support. I personally hate sling wraps.

I would put away an x amount of money every month to go towards diapers and wipes. I know a lot of people stock up, but you won't know what's going to work best for you until baby is here.

thanks, a lot of this was already on my list (i just didn't feel like typing out every single thing). i plan to do a dresser with a change pad on top because i just don't see a point/place for a changing table in our nursery. a pack and play with a bassinet insert and change station was actually the first thing i put on my list, we'll keep it on our main level and use it to travel too.
i think that the diaper bag will end up being trial and error, and i definitely want the baby carrier to be something hubby would wear too.

I never used the change station on the pack 'n play for either kids (and actually left it at my parents so I didn't have to haul it back), but I know a lot of people do. I also didn't care for the bassinet that came with it. I bought it off a resale site, though, and didn't get the one I REALLY wanted.

I have a JuJuBe BFF diaper bag, with a BeQuick for the diapers/wipes/butt necessities that I can take out and throw in my purse or just bring that to the bathroom instead of the entire bag. It's a little more expensive of a bag, but the organization is amazing and that's what I really wanted. I'm a member of Ipsy so I get their makeup subscription monthly and every month, they have a little bag. Those little bags are used in my diaper bag for different things - medicines, my essentials, change of clothes for Ev, etc.

So many things are personal preference. My must-have items were:

-cloth diapers (as well as wipes, pail liners, pail, wet bags, etc)
-bouncer/swing combo - this was worth it's weight in gold even though it was only used for the first 6 months. The bouncer seat you can pull off and use around the house by itself.
-baby carrier - I love my tula and kinderpacks, but I have heard good things about lillebaby and beco
-changing pad and covers - We put ours directly on top of the dresser. I find changing stations to be a waste of space. Both our boys have had projectile poops at times, so I prefer to not change on the bed/couch/floor.
-nosefrida
-white noise machine
-Cribs and pack n plays are nice, but we ended up bed-sharing with both because it was the only way I could get any sleep. Obviously another personal decision that depends on your comfort level and individual sleep habits.

i think that the baby carrier is going to be the biggest personal choice we make. i'll definitely have to do some serious research (and maybe some trial and error) here.
we're on the same page with the change pad on the dresser deal - i just think that's the best option for us.
we have no plans for co-sleeping or bedsharing, so i'm really happy that my mother-in-law told us that she plans to buy us a crib, and a pack and play (with bassinet and change station) was the first thing on my registry.
thanks for your advice, and i'm sure i'll ask for it again.

i'm feeling pretty good right now, thanks for asking. they weren't kidding with that second trimester is better stuff; i've been less tired lately, and thankfully it's been weeks since i've felt nauseous.

Oh, see if there's a "baby carrier library" around you! There's one here where you can "check out" different carriers.

P.S. I know you're out of the first trimester, but how have you been feeling??

I'm not yet a mom, but I know my best friend swore by the rock and play. Both of her babies slept in that when they were really small. She loved it.

Also, Kevin and I put aside $75 each paycheck, so $150 a month to save for stuff for baby.

have you started a registry yet?
i find it awkward when people ask me already what we need, but i am sure that baby's arrival will sneak up before we know it. after the holiday rush is over, we're planning to pick some paint and start in on the nursery.

No, we haven't started one yet. We probably will next week, once we know the sex.
