Technically what he said was "off the record". It was supposed to be a conversation between him and someone interviewing him. Someone taped it, and put it on twitter.

Publicity, everyones talking about him, people are looking him up etc. Everyone loves to hate a villain. Meanwhile hes getting richer from people who pick up his music just from the hype.

If I was famous I'd do the same at one point. It sells.
