Call me a creature living in a dark cave all my life, but what are the 42 plots? Like, is it a movie? That lists 42 ways to kill him?

there is supposedly an actual list. but it's also a national geographic movie based on them.

I found some partial lists of plots. It's difficult to find much on the subject, because most sites just cover the Valkyrie attempt in '44.

why is it so hard??!

Most likely because there's TONS of sites documenting only the most famous attempts. I figured out that when you're searching for something specific, you have to fiddle around with your wording in order to filter out the more popular matches. So a search could take a lot longer than you thought.

Using quotations and the + sign generally help narrow down ones search with pretty much any search engine.

I've actually found that no matter how good your use of + and ", it's all about the wording. So in this case, instead of searching for, say, "42 plots to kill hitler," which only came up with a ton of movie results, I searched simply "plots to kill hitler" and sifted through a few pages of results until everything I saw was redundant.
