Weekend tribute

03/15/2010

The fourth annual "Legends Helping Legends" fund raiser and motorsports hall of fame induction took place Sunday in Mooresville, NC and as always I drove up to attend. I wanted to build a model car to have signed at the event since they always have a lot of retired drivers and participants in attendance so last Monday night I decided to get started on a model car. I chose the 1968 Ford Torino that Bobby Allison drove for Bondy Long of Camden, SC. I always loved that type of car, I think that was the prettiest version, and I saw Bobby drive that very car in the spring race at Atlanta that year only 42 years ago...

Anyway, I had paint and decals so all I needed was a kit. I had two options, I settled on backdating a kit of the 1969 Torino Talladega because it was already a kit of a racing car. To backdate it I had to reshape the nose with a Dremel tool, files, and sandpaper. I think it turned out pretty good. Then I prepped and painted the body, painted and assembled the engine and chassis, and applied the decals to the body. I had a paint mishap on Wednesday night so I had to prep a second body and hurriedly get it painted and ready to finish. I'll strip the other body now that I have plenty of time. That's why I like to keep multiples of the same kit if I know I want to do several different versions! Anyway, I sort of took Friday night off since I had all day Saturday, that almost bit me in the butt. I ended up working until midnight Saturday night to finish it, every time I opened the case Sunday to get someone to sign it the paint fumes would almost knock me down they were so fresh! I got two different drivers who actually drove that car to sign it, the owner was supposed to be there but he didn't show up for some reason. Here's how it turned out:

Here it is inside the case, with the drivers' signatures on the case:

And here are the nose modifications:

And a photo of an actual 1968 Torino nose for reference:

I'm pleased with the way it turned out, especially for a very quick build. One of my favorite color schemes ever!
