Tom the plumber

10/31/2009

Two weeks ago I was Tom the mechanic when I repaired the seat heater in my car. This weekend I had to be a plumber to repair a leaky water pipe. I had noticed a damp spot in the yard during the summer but it was in a spot where the fence and house keeps the ground in the shade all the time so I thought (hoped!) that it was just never drying out after the sprinklers ran in the mornings. I turned the sprinkler system off for the winter two weeks ago, though, and the ground was even wetter than before when I used the gate in the fence this past week. Okay, that's not good. I dug up the water pipe today and found the leak, it was a tiny leak in a seam where two pieces of pipe had been cemented together. I'm not sure if it was installed incorrectly or if the previous owners damaged it by parking a moving truck on top of it when they packed to move but I had to shut off the water supply to the house and cut out the joint.

One trip to Lowe's later to get the repair section and two sets of blinds for my bedroom (another project for later this weekend...) and I got the repair finished quickly. The longest part was cooling my heels for two hours waiting for the cement to cure so that I could turn on the main water supply and check for leaks. Yes, the house has had no running water all day while I completed the repair! The pressure check turned up no leaks so I refilled the hole with dirt, put away my tools, and took a well-deserved shower. I'm very happy to mark THAT task as complete!

It was a gorgeous day today for my project. When I first peeked out this morning it was very cloudy but by the time I went out to start digging the sun had come out and it was an absolutely perfect day to be working outside. 80 degrees, a nice breeze, and sunny. If I absolutely had to dig up a water pipe I couldn't have asked for a nicer day. Just as I finished filling the hole and replacing the sod a heavy cloud passed over and I thought it might rain but I just got out of the shower and the sun's back out. Go figure.
