Tijuana Pig Plague

04/30/2009

Everyone is in fear of the Mexican Swine Flu around here since there were cases confirmed among a group of students from a private school about 35 miles from here after they returned home from a trip to Mexico last week. I’m not sure how you distinguish the Pig Plague from the normal everyday Crud variety of influenza, the boss missed Monday and today with what is apparently a rather mild case of the Crud variety. Plus, with the spring pollen in the air now everyone is suffering from some level of allergy as well. Our company picnic is scheduled for Saturday, I don’t expect there to be any unusual precautions taken unless the local outbreak spreads. I’m not particularly concerned, one of the unexpected benefits of my two week bout with the Hong Kong strain of influenza during the 1968 pandemic has been an immunity to the more mundane varieties of flu since then.

Random thought: If a Muslim comes down with the Swine Flu, does that mean he’s now an infidel?

I tried to look up the lyrics to Nick “Chinga” Chavin’s recording of “Talkin’ Matamoros First Piece of Ass Blues” to accompany my thoughts on the Tijuana Pig Plague, but I couldn’t find the lyrics online.

I’m still behind on uploading my photos from my Easter vacation. I attended a Vintage Racer’s Reunion last Saturday on the other side of town, though, and I took lots of photos from that. There were restored and preserved race cars dating all the way back to the 1950’s there, with a really good representation from the mid ‘60s through the early ‘70s. Even though I never raced in this area the cars were similar enough that they brought back a lot of memories. I talked to one of the old drivers, Charlie Mincey from the metro Atlanta area, for a while. He had brought a couple of restored cars with him that were from the era of the very early ‘60’s when the cut-down 1930’s coupes and sedans were being raced as “Modifieds” in the southeast. I had seen Mr. Mincey race in the later ‘60s and through the ‘70s so it was a pleasure to meet him. Here are a few photos from that event:

There were also some vintage and custom street cars on display:

I promise to write an update on my vacation, I just need to go through all my photos and get them uploaded. Other than that, not much has happened since my vacation.
