Summer plans

03/23/2010

Our summer plans have been made. We’ll be driving to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the Easter holiday so that we can visit my wife’s family there. Her mother is in her mid 80s and we haven’t visited in two years so we’re past due. Her family always creates drama and this time is no exception but I convinced her that it’s important for her to visit regardless. Our annual vacation had been somewhat up in the air until this past weekend, I wanted to go someplace new but my wife wanted to stay someplace within fairly easy driving distance. Friday’s mail brought us a wedding invitation for the week of Memorial day, a very good friend (who I met here on Bloop!) is getting married in Middle Tennessee so after researching vacation destinations we decided to again visit Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg and rent a cabin from Saturday through Monday then drive to Middle Tennessee on Tuesday for the wedding on Wednesday. Then we’ll drive home after the wedding and I’ll be back at work Thursday. Since Monday is a holiday (Memorial Day) I’ll only have to take two days off, if we had just gone to the wedding and not taken a vacation in the same trip I’d still have required those same two days of vacation so it worked out well. That will be my last time off until I make my annual trip to the petit LeMans endurance race in north Georgia in late September or early October.

We received some bad news at work today. Late last year the government awarded the next contract for our primary machine gun to our competitor. We appealed, the appeal was heard and the government agreed that we had grounds. They adjusted the bid scored but still awarded the contract to the competitor. I hope this won’t lead to cutbacks here, I’ll be watching carefully to see what happens.

Wow. Sometimes I just can't believe the lengths that people will go to in some situations. I can't believe that she was only 17! That had to be a shock. Kind of a double whammy actually.

The wedding seems to have come at the perfect time. It's always nice to have a vacation to look forward to.
