Someone at GM has quite a sense of humor

09/21/2011

I installed the new receiver module for my keyless entry in the Aztek tonight. The shop manual said that I need a scan tool to program the remotes but I knew there should be a way to do it without one. I did a quick internet search and found a site with programming instructions for most vehicles. To program my Aztek I had to follow these steps:

1. Press and hold the driver's side door lock button in the "unlock" position while inserting and removing the ignition key twice.

2. Release the door "unlock" button and listen for three chimes. This indicates the vehicle is in the Program mode.

3. Simultaneously press and hold the "Lock" ad "Unlock" buttons on the remote until you hear two chimes.

4. Repeat step 3 for up to four different remotes.

It reminded me of the time I needed to re-calibrate the compass in that vehicle. There were a series of steps I had to follow to place the vehicle in the "Calibrate" mode. Then I was instructed to drive the car in a full circle three times. Or the procedure for resetting the oil life monitor in my GTO: Turn the key to the "Run" position then depress the accelerator pedal four times in rapid succession. Who thinks of these things?

This has been a very busy month at work. My group had two separate sets of guns to deliver this week, four examples of one type of gun and ten examples of a different type of gun. These were provided to the government in response to two different solicitations. We all came in on Saturday and worked for seven hours, several of the guys came in on Sunday as well. Then, on Monday morning we learned through the Director of Contracts that the solicitation for the 10 guns was extended for a month. At first I was annoyed, we had put in a LOT of work and we were on track to meet our deadline so I was annoyed by the waste of all the extra hours we all invested to get ours finished on time. But as it turned out, we needed all our resources to complete the four guns that had to be shipped today so it was for the best.

Another model car show is on the schedule for this weekend. I will plan on not getting sick this time...
