My Halloween costume *EDIT*

10/31/2011

I decided that I’m dressing up as a middle-aged man who’s overworked and underappreciated this year for Halloween. Is that scary enough?

I had a very nice, very productive weekend. I had Friday off because my manager gave everyone a comp day for all the hours we had put in the week before so I did the food shopping on Thursday night and planned to mostly relax on Friday. One of my cars had been showing the Air Bag warning light recently though so when I woke up Friday I called the dealership to make an appointment. They told me I could bring it right in so I took it in around 9am then got a haircut and picked up a couple of items that I wasn’t able to get when I was at the supermarket on Thursday. I went home, cleaned out my work car, ate an early lunch, then decided I should mow my lawn one last time before it rained then turned cold. I needed a new gas can so I bought one then got a couple of gallons of gasoline and mowed the lawn. When that was done I took a short nap then began working on a model car project. When I went into the garage to paint I realized one of the bare light bulbs in the overhead was burned out so I decided it was as good a time as any to install the light fixtures I had scavenged from the house when I installed ceiling fans in the bedroom. Yes, I know that was four years ago and I still hadn’t installed the fixtures in the garage. Don’t judge lol. Naturally, nothing goes as planned so after I had the power turned off and the first bare hanging light socket removed I discovered that I needed longer mounting hardware for the new fixtures. A quick trip to the Home Depot and I was set, of course it was getting dark by this time. I finished wiring and mounting the first fixture then on to the second. It was pitch dark by now so I had a big lantern and a little Maglite to try and finish the job. I got the second fixture installed, turned the power back on, checked the nice new lights, and… the second fixture wasn’t working. I changed the bulb to no avail. So, off with the power again and I lowered the fixture to see what the problem was. Apparently in the poor light I had failed to get a good connection with the wire nut joining the black wires. I corrected that, verified that both the black and the white wires were securely joined, reinstalled the fixture, and this time I had light. Of course, then I had to repair my airbrushes before I could paint the model car project but that’s another story entirely.

Saturday was a bit more low-key. I spent most of the morning picking up, cleaning, and organizing then I went out to pick up a couple of bottles of paint for the model car. The rest of the day was spent with more of the same, a mix of organizing and hobby work and TV. We woke up Sunday and went to a local seafood restaurant for lunch, browsed around for an hour or so, then went back home. I went through my household files for the year to make sure everything was organized and properly filed in preparation for the tax season as well as to file my Flexible Spending Account expenses for the year. Then more hobby work and TV. I felt as if I got a lot of stuff done yet I was able to relax too. I need a three day weekend every week!

*EDIT*

I completely forgot to mention that my dryer chose to die last night. It's seven years old and had been making more noise lately so I suspected the rollers that support the drum were about to die. Last night around 6pm it tripped the breaker, and when I reset the breaker the dryer only ran for a half minute or so before tripping the breaker again. Of course all the big box home centers close by 7pm on Sunday evening so shopping for a new one was out of the question. Instead, I did some research online and then went shopping for one when I came home from work tonight. I could have repaired mine for less than $100 if it was what I suspected but I had to replace the old washer that matched it last year when the washer's transmission died. I had replaced the washer with one of the front loading high-efficiency models and I'm replacing the old dryer with the matching dryer for the new washer. It'll be delivered on Friday.
