A plague of Biblical proportions

04/07/2010

We’ve had no springtime here! It seems it went directly from cold and wet to miserably hot and dry with only a week of nice weather in between. It’s been at least 90°F each day this week and with the thick chartreuse tree pollen coating everything the misery factor is quite high. The forecasters are calling for rain tomorrow afternoon though, with several days of cooler weather to follow. I can hardly wait!

Our trip to Mississippi was… Interesting. We left town around 8:30 am last Thursday and arrived at my wife’s sister’s house at a little past 5 pm Central time, some nine and a half hours on the road. The trip was uneventful even with passing through Atlanta on the last day before a long weekend, we had no particular traffic delays although there was a long traffic jam in the eastbound lanes of I-20 out in the eastern suburbs as we were heading into town westbound. Anyway, when we arrived she called her mother and everything seemed fine. She made arrangements to call her mother the next morning so that her mother would unlock the gate in the tall fence around her property and let my wife in so that she could visit for a couple of days. The next day my wife called several times between 11 am and 4 pm but her mother would never pick up the phone. We have no idea what made her mad enough to prevent my wife from visiting her but she never got to spend any time at all with her mother after we drove that long distance to visit. We never received a return call or anything, her mother just ignored the fact that she was in town to visit. Her mother had threatened to do that earlier, she was angry that my wife wasn’t staying with her the entire time but as I said everything seemed fine right up until her mother began ignoring her.

It wasn’t a total loss, we were able to spend our time with her younger sister (who the mother had begun ignoring over a year ago) and we got some shopping done but it was still painful for both sisters.

We returned home Monday, the time zone change is a killer for coming home from there. We left at 9 am Central time and didn’t arrive back home until almost 9 pm Eastern time. We did take a cross-country route to avoid Atlanta and the traffic tie-up we saw on eastbound I-20 when we were passing through last week, we detoured down through Columbus and Macon, GA to avoid the congestion. It added almost an hour to my travel time but considering that we would have been hitting Atlanta at the start of rush hour traffic I think it was still the best choice. Getting home so late after a long drive left me completely exhausted for work yesterday. I’m still not completely recovered, I think I need a nap this afternoon!
