Why are cute animal photos so popular?

12/10/2020

I like cute animal photos but I'm not really fond of seeing a lot of them. In fact, on Twitter my feed tended to be basically a bunch of animal photos and other stuff that was OK in small doses but that I didn't enjoy in large chunks. So I quit using Twitter, not because of the animal pics I mean but because basically everything in my feed was stuff I didn't want a lot of. I didn't erase my accounts though. That was mainly just to make Twitter have to store my stuff in case I decide to come back to it, when they can get their fancy algorithms to show ppl stuff they actually enjoy.

Backt to the animal pics, I can see the appeal for sharing adorable pictures of animals than before, the little things make a difference. In the past, I found it a bit more frustrating as I saw Twitter as more of a professional/business thing, and less as a personal-I'll-share-animal-photos thing. But I can see how with all the negativity that's happening in the world, cute animal photos are a way to sort of try to balance that out a bit. It's nice to look at an adorable animal who is not set on doing bad stuff to people. Plus, even a large dose of cute animal photos is better than seeing political tweets and rants. You'd think on only 280 characters there's a limit to how much political hatefulness there could be (as compared to FB, where ppl can go on long rants, ugh, no wonder most ppl don't even use it anymore) but even on Twitter's limited length there's still enough hateful stuff being spewed that I'm so glad I'm not on it anymore. I just wish I'd stopped earlier.

Reading books, especially romantic comedies, has been a recent mood lifter for me. My most recent read in that genre was Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao (check out its info at GoodReads). Definitely worth a read for anyone who wants some light-hearted fun fiction to escape with that still tackles some serious topics.

My twitter is the one social media thing I have (outside of my private bloop) that I can just be myself on. With my job, I can't talk about my politics on Facebook (a client could see), I can't call anti-maskers assholes, I can't rant about how bad my period cramps are.
The few IRL people that follow me on twitter don't mind it.
I could see where twitter could be seen as a more professional place, but for me and a lot of others, it's not. It's one of my go-to sites to find news as it happens, see cute animals, or read up on celebrities.
