All about my new job

01/29/2012

Firstly, who do you work for? The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company, aka The Dominion

What is your position? Underwriting Assistant, although i'm still in training. It's a 6-month training process.

What are your responsibilities? Basically issuing policies, adding endorsements or renewals to existing policies, tons of processing for commercial auto and property. That sounds so boring haha, but actually I haven't be bored there yet.

Do you enjoy your job? Too new at it to know, but I like the people I work with, and the job has some neat perks.

Do you work with other people, or solo? A lot of it's independent, but there are other people around and help each other out a lot.

What are your co-workers like? Very friendly. Like, way so more than any job I've ever had before. It's a cheery place to work haha...and the girl I share a cubicle aisle with and I have already gotten into a big book discussion, so I think I will have someone to talk books with

What is/are your boss(es) like? Friendly, outgoing, pretty laidback.

Do you wear a uniform? Nope, just business casual dress

Are you usually very busy, or is it slack? It'll be busy once I'm done with training, because we're seriously short-staffed in UAs. I think everyone is looking forward to me being able to take on some of their work haha.

Do you get paid minimum wage, or above? I get paid a salary, and it is far above minimum wage. In terms of an hourly rate it works out somewhere around $30/hour.

What time of day do you usually work? 9-5

How many hours a week do you get? 37.5

Would you like to keep this job your whole life? I'm still finding it weird to think that far ahead; that I could probably stay there my whole life if I wanted to. It's a big transition from being an unemployed university grad with very little chance of finding a full-time job suitable to my qualifications. I imagine even if I stay in this line I would want to end up as an Underwriter or above.

Why are you working this job right now? Because you need to start somewhere in the industry, and this is actually a little above where I thought I'd have to start

Are you saving or spending most of your money? I'll be saving as much as possible so I can move out.

Do you deal with customers or clients? Once I'm done training I'll be dealing with brokers, but not with actual clients.

Are they generally agreeable? *shrug*

How do you react when they are not agreeable? In my old jobs where this was a factor I'd usually just continue to smile and talk in a cheerful voice. It riles them up so much more if you refuse to respond in kind

Have you ever been written up? What happened? No

What are some things that you absolutely CANNOT do at your job? Most things haha, it's a very complicated system

Are there any risks involved in your job? What are they? Major weight gain from sitting at a desk

Have you ever forgotten to do something important? What happened? Nah

Are you allowed to read/watch TV/play video games on the job? I check various accounts online during the day and will text people, but it's just for brief periods of time before doing other things.

What are your breaks like? A halfhour lunch that isn't strictly monitored, and ends up being more like 45 minutes for most people, since the morning/afternoon short breaks are rarely taken.

Do you ever get really bored at your job? I haven't so far, but that's because I'm currently being overwhelmed with information.

How do you keep yourself entertained? I keep busy.

Is your workplace clean? Who cleans it? Yeah, there are custodians that come in after hours.

Is your job physically demanding? Ha, no.

What would happen if a robbery took place? We wouldn't have any money, so I can't imagine this happening. Also, you need pass keys to get onto most floors of the building.

What are your customers/clients' biggest complaints? I don't have to deal with that, thankfully.

What's the strangest thing you've ever seen happen at your job? I dunno.

Tell us about the time you were most upset at work. There hasn't been one at this job.

If you're upset, do you act any differently towards customers?

The phone rings, and you have to answer it. HOW do you answer? Caitlin Shaw, commercial lines.

Is there a duty you really despise doing? Meh

Is ther a duty you love doing? ...

Is there anything you are scared of at your job? Nope, everyone is pretty helpful when I become baffled by non-sensical DOS programs.

Are there many things to laugh at? Sure

What are the bathrooms there like? Nice, clean, automatic everything.

How long do you plan to keep working there? Why? I'd like it to be the launchpad into some kind of lifelong career.

Has anyone ever screamed at your job? Why? Not at me...

Do you ever need to mentally prepare yourself for work? Mostly I need to drink a lot of coffee so I'm awake LOL

How do you wind down after a hard day's work? I smoke weed and watch TV. Last week I felt braindead by the time I got home. I think it's the commute: 1 hour 10 minutes each way.

Is your job stressful? It seems like it will be a little. Everyone else there has a low buzz of stress going on all the time.

Who would you reccommend your job to? I don't know. You need some education to get in, then you have to pray for a whole lotta luck just to get an interview. Took me a year and a half, plus a big stress weight gain and the possibility that I lost my mind a little bit, and was more depressed than I've ever been. Sooo, if you feel like dealing with all that, I'd recommend it to you LOL
