John Lennon was a CLOSET REPUBLICAN!!

07/19/2011

John Lennon was a closet Republican, who felt a little embarrassed by his former radicalism, at the time of his death - according to the tragic Beatles star's last personal assistant.

Fred Seaman worked alongside the music legend from 1979 to Lennon's death at the end of 1980 and he reveals the star was a Ronald Reagan fan who enjoyed arguing with left-wing radicals who reminded him of his former self.

In new documentary Beatles Stories, Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn't the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.

He says, "John, basically, made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on (Democrat) Jimmy Carter.

"He'd met Reagan back, I think, in the 70s at some sporting event... Reagan was the guy who had ordered the National Guard, I believe, to go after the young (peace) demonstrators in Berkeley, so I think that John maybe forgot about that... He did express support for Reagan, which shocked me.

"I also saw John embark in some really brutal arguments with my uncle, who's an old-time communist... He enjoyed really provoking my uncle... Maybe he was being provocative... but it was pretty obvious to me he had moved away from his earlier radicalism.

"He was a very different person back in 1979 and 80 than he'd been when he wrote Imagine. By 1979 he looked back on that guy and was embarrassed by that guy's naivete."

Haha - a lot of people become more right wing as they get older and richer! Like, Ben Elton used to do brilliant left-wing stand-up comedy, but now has totally sold out and writes musicals with Andrew Lloyd Webber!

"Sold out?" Why is it "brilliant" when it's left-wing, but "sold out" when it's not? People get wiser as they get older, that's probably why they get more right-wing. We sell out as children and young people to the leftist, liberal media crap and, unfortunately, some people stay stuck in it. As one gets older, most folks realize what is actually important: principles, not platitudes.

Sold out because he's contradicting all he stood up for before, for the sake of getting rich. Back in the day he was more about principles, and exposing hypocrisy. But people easily abandon their principles if they have an opportunity to get rich quick!

As for brilliance, that has nothing to do with left wing or right wing, but when he was a stand-up comedian, his comedy was original and brilliant. Now, he just churns out generic stuff, because that's how he can make money.

In short, he has abandoned his former principles and become one of the people that he used his brilliant wit to expose in his youth, just so that he could make a lot of money. That's what 'sold out' means. Abandoning one's principles to make a quick buck. Do you not have that expression in the US? It often happens as people get older because they tend to have families to support and so they become more inward looking, looking after their own, rather than wanting to change the world. Whether that's right or wrong is of course a matter of opinion, but 'sold out' is the generally accepted term to describe it.

Also, bear in mind that American politics are quite different from British politics, and your political parties actually don't correspond with ours. Your 'liberal media crap' is US specific.

We have the term here. But it's more about "selling out" to the mainstream (music, opinion, whatever), not necessarily against oneself.

"Also, bear in mind that American politics are quite different from British politics, and your political parties actually don't correspond with ours. Your 'liberal media crap' is US specific."

That could be true. We could have different definitions of 'liberal.'
