using IVF, a mother can now choose what the sex of her baby will be. a doctor is claiming that he'll be able to give mothers the option to choose things such as hair color and eye color in only six short months. would you use this technology? what do you think of it?

I think it's stupid. Why can't parents just be happy with the baby they NATURALLY get? I don't care what color my baby's eyes are, or how button her nose is, or if his hair is red or black. Why can't they just be HAPPY with the baby genetics naturally gives the baby?

Those are pretty much my exact thoughts, lol. Like, I can understand being pissed if you have five boys, and get pregnant with a sixth boy, and you're pissed. But honestly, if the baby is healthy, it shouldn't matter. Then again, there are parents that want "perfect" children, blonde hair, blue eyes, etc. Idk, I think it's a complete waste of money. If someone wants to spend however much to do that, then all the power to them. But I'd rather set that money aside for my kids' college.

I have four boys. If my next child is a boy I will count my blessings...not be pissed off.

if someone is pissed because they pop out too many boys, they're having children for the WRONG reason. :P

it's normal to be a bit annoyed that if you have five boys, and you were trying for a girl this time around, and ended up having another boy. you're not having kids for the wrong reason, you just hope that this next child would be a girl. you're taking chances either way.

Honestly I think it's selfish and disgusting. I don't understand why people can't just be happy with a healthy baby. Unfortunately, I know a couple of people that would do this in a heartbeat...

I agree with most of the posts... reality, however, is that there are a LOT of people who will pay for, and WANT this technology. They want PERFECT babies to fit into their PERFECT little lives. It's been a long time coming. Hasn't it? I mean, there are people that will pay anything to get exactly what they want.
Personally, I thought that I wanted ONLY BOYS, and NO GIRLS. I didn't want the hassle of girls. Didn't want to deal with mini-drama queens all day. When I got pregnant, though, my main concern was a healthy baby. That's all. I had a girl, and I can say that even though I wanted a boy, and I thought that's what was best, God knew otherwise. My girl is my life. I could NOT be happier with my precious girl, and I thank God every day for her. When people start playing God, and not leaving it up to Him... it's bound to come back to them in the end. Don't you think?

Well, I can see this technology being used for better things, like eliminating heart disease that runs in family or hemophilia, with work. The flipside though is that diseases and illness are SUPPOSED to fucking happen. Those things are nature's built-in way of population control. I think it's silly how humans as a collective think we're immune to the whole biological-ecosystem-carrying-capacity-limit-thing, but that's a different argument for a different day.

When it comes to deciding the sex of a child, I think it's highly useful. Imagine the family where the parents are trying so hard for a boy to carry on the family name, and all they keep having is girls? Something like this would be helpful to that couple. Shitting out 5 little girls is not some divine sign that God wants you to never have a male child, when in reality it might just be your husbands sperm or your eggs. Something like this could really be useful if applied to less vain things like picking your child's haircolor or eyecolor.

Lord knows my haircolor and eye color never stayed the same. I was born a blue-eyed, ash-blonde haired child. Then my eyes changed from blue to dark brown, and my hair turned to dark brown, and now my eyes over the past year have been slowly turning green. Things in people change post birth sometimes, so the initial predisposition and selection is pointless, IMO.

WELL, SUPPOSEDLY ALL BABIES ARE BORN WITH BLUE EYES, YO! GOSH, YOU CAN JUST IMAGINE ALL THESE PARENTS TAKING THEIR BABIES BACK TO THE STORE AND SAYING 'WE ORDERED A BROWN-EYED BABY, YO! WE DON'T WANT THIS ONE!'

LIKE, SERIOUSLY, IMAGINE IF THE BABY DOESN'T TURN OUT LIKE THEY WANT AND THEY DECIDE TO SUE! THAT POOR KID WILL HAVE SOME MAJOR SELF-ESTEEM ISSUES!

ANOTHER THING THAT I ALWAYS IMAGINE WITH REGARD TO DESIGNER BABIES IS THAT IF YOU ARE A CHILD WHO KNOWS YOUR PARENTS ORDERED YOUR BLONDE HAIR FOR YOU, YOU WILL TOTALLY DYE IT BLACK WHEN YOU GET TO YOUR TEENAGE REBELLION YEARS, YO! LIKE REBELLION WILL BE SO MUCH MORE TARGETTED!

I dont think I would use it.
I would want to be surprised with a naturally made baby that looks like both me and the father.

However my children come out is not my choice, it's God's choice alone. I would never tamper with something that I have been lucky enough to be blessed with.

I think that you should just be happy that you're HAVING a child. If anything, wouldn't you want him or her to be HEALTHY? What does it matter what color of eyes the baby has unless you've been fooling around with your brown eyed husband and pop out a blue eyed child?

If someone is that nit-picky, they might as well adopt a kid with all the exact things they want. It would probably be cheaper than all that genetic stuff. Sheesh...

They only thing I would even consider tampering with is health issues. Like, heart problems that run in my family has been passed on to my daughter. IF and that's a big IF I would have another child, I think if they had the technology, I'd say "Hey, can you kinda get rid of any potential heart problem?" Not for my sake or my own selfish desires to have the perfect child, but so said child would not have to go through what his or her sister is going through at the moment, ya know?

At this point, all the failed attempts at getting pregnant in the last year and a half...if I were to have IVF I'd just be happy with a baby, any baby, whether it has a penis or vagina or both, red hair, brown hair, blonde hair, brown eyes, green eyes....whatever! I just want to be a mother!

i'd rather go with the randomness of genes being thrown together. though the being able to choose the sex is tempting. if i had all boys or girls i might just wanna intervene to give me one of the ones i don't have ;D

Ugh, that's ridiculous. I mean sure, everyone I'm sure has their hearts set on having either a boy or a girl, or hopes that they look like so-and so...but come on now....as long as the baby is healthy, and has a loving happy family, that should be all that matters
